Quran 22:71

Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 71

وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِۦ سُلْطَٰنًا وَمَا لَيْسَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَمَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِن نَّصِيرٍ

Word by word

وَيَعْبُدُونَ wayaʿbudūna And they worship مِن min besides Allah دُونِ dūni besides Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi besides Allah مَا mā what لَمْ lam not يُنَزِّلْ yunazzil He (has) sent down بِهِۦ bihi for it سُلْطَـٰنًۭا sul'ṭānan any authority وَمَا wamā and what لَيْسَ laysa not لَهُم lahum they have بِهِۦ bihi of it عِلْمٌۭ ۗ ʿil'mun any knowledge وَمَا wamā And not لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ lilẓẓālimīna (will be) for the wrongdoers مِن min any نَّصِيرٍۢ naṣīrin helper

Transliteration

WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi malam yunazzil bihi sultanan wama laysa lahum bihiAAilmun wama liththalimeenamin naseer

Translations

And they worship instead of Allah that for which He hath sent down no warrant, and that whereof they have no knowledge. For evil-doers there is no helper.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Yet they worship, besides Allah, things for which no authority has been sent down to them, and of which they have (really) no knowledge: for those that do wrong there is no helper.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن المشركين فيما جهلوا وكفروا ، وعبدوا من دون الله ما لم ينزل به سلطانا ، يعني : حجة وبرهانا ، كقوله : ( ومن يدع مع الله إلها آخر لا برهان له به فإنما حسابه عند ربه إنه لا يفلح الكافرون ) [ المؤمنون : 117 ] . ولهذا قال هاهنا : ( ما لم ينزل به سلطانا وما ليس لهم به علم ) أي : ولا علم لهم فيما اختلقوه وائتفكوه ، وإنما هو أمر تلقوه عن آبائهم وأسلافهم ، بلا دليل ولا حجة ، وأصله مما سول لهم الشيطان وزينه لهم; ولهذا توعدهم تعالى بقوله : ( وما للظالمين من نصير ) أي : من ناصر ينصرهم من الله ، فيما يحل بهم من العذاب والنكال .
