Quran 22:72

Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 72

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍ تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلْمُنكَرَ يَكَادُونَ يَسْطُونَ بِٱلَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا قُلْ أَفَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِشَرٍّ مِّن ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَعَدَهَا ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

Word by word

وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when تُتْلَىٰ tut'lā are recited عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them ءَايَـٰتُنَا āyātunā Our Verses بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ bayyinātin clear تَعْرِفُ taʿrifu you will recognize فِى fī on وُجُوهِ wujūhi (the) faces ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve ٱلْمُنكَرَ ۖ l-munkara the denial يَكَادُونَ yakādūna They almost يَسْطُونَ yasṭūna attack بِٱلَّذِينَ bi-alladhīna those who يَتْلُونَ yatlūna recite عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them ءَايَـٰتِنَا ۗ āyātinā Our Verses قُلْ qul Say أَفَأُنَبِّئُكُم afa-unabbi-ukum Then shall I inform you بِشَرٍّۢ bisharrin of worse مِّن min than ذَٰلِكُمُ ۗ dhālikumu that ٱلنَّارُ l-nāru The Fire وَعَدَهَا waʿadahā Allah (has) promised it ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah (has) promised it ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (for) those who كَفَرُوا۟ ۖ kafarū disbelieve وَبِئْسَ wabi'sa and wretched ٱلْمَصِيرُ l-maṣīru (is) the destination

Transliteration

Wa-itha tutla AAalayhim ayatunabayyinatin taAArifu fee wujoohi allatheena kafarooalmunkara yakadoona yastoona billatheenayatloona AAalayhim ayatina qulafaonabbi-okum bisharrin min thalikum annaruwaAAadaha Allahu allatheena kafaroo wabi/saalmaseer

Translations

And when Our revelations are recited unto them, thou knowest the denial in the faces of those who disbelieve; they all but attack those who recite Our revelations unto them. Say: Shall I proclaim unto you worse than that? The Fire! Allah hath promised it for those who disbelieve. A hapless journey's end!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, thou wilt notice a denial on the faces of the Unbelievers! they nearly attack with violence those who rehearse Our Signs to them. Say, "Shall I tell you of something (far) worse than these Signs? It is the Fire (of Hell)! Allah has promised it to the Unbelievers! and evil is that destination!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( وإذا تتلى عليهم آياتنا بينات ) أي : وإذا ذكرت لهم آيات القرآن والحجج والدلائل الواضحات على توحيد الله ، وأنه لا إله إلا هو ، وأن رسله الكرام حق وصدق ، ( يكادون يسطون بالذين يتلون عليهم آياتنا ) أي : يكادون يبادرون الذين يحتجون عليهم بالدلائل الصحيحة من القرآن ، ويبسطون إليهم أيديهم وألسنتهم بالسوء! ) قل ) أي : يا محمد لهؤلاء . ( أفأنبئكم بشر من ذلكم النار وعدها الله الذين كفروا ) أي : النار وعذابها ونكالها أشد وأشق وأطم وأعظم مما تخوفون به أولياء الله المؤمنين في الدنيا ، وعذاب الآخرة على صنيعكم هذا أعظم مما تنالون منهم ، إن نلتم بزعمكم وإرادتكم .

وقوله : ( وبئس المصير ) أي : وبئس النار منزلا ومقيلا ومرجعا وموئلا ومقاما ، ( إنها ساءت مستقرا ومقاما ) [ الفرقان : 66 ] .
