Quran 25:37

Surah Al-Furqaan, Verse 37

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ لَّمَّا كَذَّبُوا۟ ٱلرُّسُلَ أَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ ءَايَةً وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

Word by word

وَقَوْمَ waqawma And (the) people نُوحٍۢ nūḥin (of) Nuh لَّمَّا lammā when كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū they denied ٱلرُّسُلَ l-rusula the Messengers أَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ aghraqnāhum We drowned them وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ wajaʿalnāhum and We made them لِلنَّاسِ lilnnāsi for mankind ءَايَةًۭ ۖ āyatan a sign وَأَعْتَدْنَا wa-aʿtadnā And We have prepared لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ lilẓẓālimīna for the wrongdoers عَذَابًا ʿadhāban a punishment أَلِيمًۭا alīman painful

Transliteration

Waqawma noohin lamma kaththabooarrusula aghraqnahum wajaAAalnahum linnasiayatan waaAAtadna liththalimeenaAAathaban aleema

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And Noah's folk, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them and made of them a portent for mankind. We have prepared a painful doom for evil-doers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And the people of Noah,- when they rejected the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them as a Sign for mankind; and We have prepared for (all) wrong-doers a grievous Penalty;-

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ولهذا قال : ( وقوم نوح لما كذبوا الرسل ) ، ولم يبعث إليهم إلا نوح فقط ، وقد لبث فيهم ألف سنة إلا خمسين عاما ، يدعوهم إلى الله ، ويحذرهم نقمه ، فما آمن معه إلا قليل . ولهذا أغرقهم الله جميعا ، ولم يبق منهم أحد ، ولم يبق على وجه الأرض من بني آدم سوى أصحاب السفينة فقط .

( وجعلناهم للناس آية ) أي : عبرة يعتبرون بها ، كما قال تعالى : ( إنا لما طغى الماء حملناكم في الجارية لنجعلها لكم تذكرة وتعيها أذن واعية ) [ الحاقة : 11 : 12 ] . أي : وأبقينا لكم من السفن ما تركبون في لجج البحار ، لتذكروا نعمة الله عليكم في إنجائكم من الغرق ، وجعلكم من ذرية من آمن به وصدق أمره .
