Quran 27:34

Surah An-Naml, Verse 34

قَالَتْ إِنَّ ٱلْمُلُوكَ إِذَا دَخَلُوا۟ قَرْيَةً أَفْسَدُوهَا وَجَعَلُوٓا۟ أَعِزَّةَ أَهْلِهَآ أَذِلَّةً وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

Word by word

قَالَتْ qālat She said إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلْمُلُوكَ l-mulūka the kings إِذَا idhā when دَخَلُوا۟ dakhalū they enter قَرْيَةً qaryatan a town أَفْسَدُوهَا afsadūhā they ruin it وَجَعَلُوٓا۟ wajaʿalū and make أَعِزَّةَ aʿizzata (the) most honorable أَهْلِهَآ ahlihā (of) its people أَذِلَّةًۭ ۖ adhillatan (the) lowest وَكَذَٰلِكَ wakadhālika And thus يَفْعَلُونَ yafʿalūna they do

Transliteration

Qalat inna almulooka ithadakhaloo qaryatan afsadooha wajaAAaloo aAAizzata ahlihaathillatan wakathalika yafAAaloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

She said: Lo! kings, when they enter a township, ruin it and make the honour of its people shame. Thus will they do.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

She said: "Kings, when they enter a country, despoil it, and make the noblest of its people its meanest thus do they behave.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( إن الملوك إذا دخلوا قرية أفسدوها ) .

قال ابن عباس : أي إذا دخلوا بلدا عنوة أفسدوه ، أي : خربوه ، ( وجعلوا أعزة أهلها أذلة ) أي : وقصدوا من فيها من الولاة والجنود ، فأهانوهم غاية الهوان ، إما بالقتل أو بالأسر .

قال ابن عباس : قالت بلقيس : ( إن الملوك إذا دخلوا قرية أفسدوها وجعلوا أعزة أهلها أذلة ) ، قال الرب ، عز وجل ( وكذلك يفعلون )
