Quran 27:42

Surah An-Naml, Verse 42

فَلَمَّا جَآءَتْ قِيلَ أَهَٰكَذَا عَرْشُكِ قَالَتْ كَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ وَأُوتِينَا ٱلْعِلْمَ مِن قَبْلِهَا وَكُنَّا مُسْلِمِينَ

Word by word

فَلَمَّا falammā So when جَآءَتْ jāat she came قِيلَ qīla it was said أَهَـٰكَذَا ahākadhā Is like this عَرْشُكِ ۖ ʿarshuki your throne قَالَتْ qālat She said كَأَنَّهُۥ ka-annahu It is like هُوَ ۚ huwa it وَأُوتِينَا waūtīnā And we were given ٱلْعِلْمَ l-ʿil'ma the knowledge مِن min before her قَبْلِهَا qablihā before her وَكُنَّا wakunnā and we have been مُسْلِمِينَ mus'limīna Muslims

Transliteration

Falamma jaat qeela ahakathaAAarshuki qalat kaannahu huwa waooteena alAAilmamin qabliha wakunna muslimeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

So, when she came, it was said (unto her): Is thy throne like this? She said: (It is) as though it were the very one. And (Solomon said): We were given the knowledge before her and we had surrendered (to Allah).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( فلما جاءت قيل أهكذا عرشك ) أي : عرض عليها عرشها ، وقد غير ونكر ، وزيد فيه ونقص منه ، فكان فيها ثبات وعقل ، ولها لب ودهاء وحزم ، فلم تقدم على أنه هو لبعد مسافته عنها ، ولا أنه غيره ، لما رأت من آثاره وصفاته ، وإن غير وبدل ونكر ، فقالت : ( كأنه هو ) أي : يشبهه ويقاربه . وهذا غاية في الذكاء والحزم .

وقوله : ( وأوتينا العلم من قبلها وكنا مسلمين ) : قال مجاهد : سليمان يقوله .
