Quran 27:46

Surah An-Naml, Verse 46

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ لِمَ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ قَبْلَ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ لَوْلَا تَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

Word by word

قَالَ qāla He said يَـٰقَوْمِ yāqawmi O my people لِمَ lima Why تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ tastaʿjilūna (do) you seek to hasten بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ bil-sayi-ati the evil قَبْلَ qabla before ٱلْحَسَنَةِ ۖ l-ḥasanati the good لَوْلَا lawlā Why not تَسْتَغْفِرُونَ tastaghfirūna you ask forgiveness ٱللَّهَ l-laha (of) Allah لَعَلَّكُمْ laʿallakum so that you may تُرْحَمُونَ tur'ḥamūna receive mercy

Transliteration

Qala ya qawmi limatastaAAjiloona bissayyi-ati qabla alhasanati lawlatastaghfiroona Allaha laAAallakum turhamoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: O my people! Why will ye hasten on the evil rather than the good? Why will ye not ask pardon of Allah, that ye may receive mercy.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

He said: "O my people! why ask ye to hasten on the evil in preference to the good? If only ye ask Allah for forgiveness, ye may hope to receive mercy.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( قال يا قوم لم تستعجلون بالسيئة قبل الحسنة ) ، أي : لم تدعون بحضور العذاب ، ولا تطلبون من الله رحمته ؟ ولهذا قال : ( لولا تستغفرون الله لعلكم ترحمون)
