Quran 27:56

Surah An-Naml, Verse 56

فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوٓا۟ ءَالَ لُوطٍ مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

Word by word

۞ فَمَا famā But not كَانَ kāna was جَوَابَ jawāba (the) answer قَوْمِهِۦٓ qawmihi (of) his people إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that قَالُوٓا۟ qālū they said أَخْرِجُوٓا۟ akhrijū Drive out ءَالَ āla (the) family لُوطٍۢ lūṭin (of) Lut مِّن min from قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ qaryatikum your town إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they أُنَاسٌۭ unāsun (are) people يَتَطَهَّرُونَ yataṭahharūna who keep clean and pure

Transliteration

Fama kana jawabaqawmihi illa an qaloo akhrijoo ala lootinmin qaryatikum innahum onasun yatatahharoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

But the answer of his folk was naught save that they said: Expel the household of Lot from your township, for they (forsooth) are folk who would keep clean!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

But his people gave no other answer but this: they said, "Drive out the followers of Lut from your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( فما كان جواب قومه إلا أن قالوا أخرجوا آل لوط من قريتكم إنهم أناس يتطهرون ) أي : يتحرجون من فعل ما تفعلونه ، ومن إقراركم على صنيعكم ، فأخرجوهم من بين أظهركم فإنهم لا يصلحون لمجاورتكم في بلادكم . فعزموا على ذلك ، فدمر الله عليهم وللكافرين أمثالها .
