Quran 27:80
Surah An-Naml, Verse 80

إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ
Word by word
إِنَّكَ innaka Indeed, you لَا lā (can) not تُسْمِعُ tus'miʿu cause to hear ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ l-mawtā the dead وَلَا walā and not تُسْمِعُ tus'miʿu can you cause to hear ٱلصُّمَّ l-ṣuma the deaf ٱلدُّعَآءَ l-duʿāa the call إِذَا idhā when وَلَّوْا۟ wallaw they turn back مُدْبِرِينَ mud'birīna retreating
Transliteration
Innaka la tusmiAAu almawta walatusmiAAu assumma adduAAaa ithawallaw mudbireen
Translations
Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall
Lo! thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call when they have turned to flee;
Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat.
تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir
( إنك لا تسمع الموتى ) أي : لا تسمعهم شيئا ينفعهم ، فكذلك هؤلاء على قلوبهم غشاوة ، وفي آذانهم وقر الكفر ; ولهذا قال : ( إنك لا تسمع الموتى ولا تسمع الصم الدعاء إذا ولوا مدبرين )
