Quran 28:86

Surah Al-Qasas, Verse 86

وَمَا كُنتَ تَرْجُوٓا۟ أَن يُلْقَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ ظَهِيرًا لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not كُنتَ kunta you were تَرْجُوٓا۟ tarjū expecting أَن an that يُلْقَىٰٓ yul'qā would be sent down إِلَيْكَ ilayka to you ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ l-kitābu the Book إِلَّا illā except رَحْمَةًۭ raḥmatan (as) a mercy مِّن min from رَّبِّكَ ۖ rabbika your Lord فَلَا falā So (do) not تَكُونَنَّ takūnanna be ظَهِيرًۭا ẓahīran an assistant لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ lil'kāfirīna to the disbelievers

Transliteration

Wama kunta tarjoo an yulqailayka alkitabu illa rahmatan min rabbikafala takoonanna thaheeran lilkafireen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Thou hadst no hope that the Scripture would be inspired in thee; but it is a mercy from thy Lord, so never be a helper to the disbelievers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And thou hadst not expected that the Book would be sent to thee except as a Mercy from thy Lord: Therefore lend not thou support in any way to those who reject (Allah's Message).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى مذكرا لنبيه نعمته العظيمة عليه وعلى العباد إذ أرسله إليهم : ( وما كنت ترجو أن يلقى إليك الكتاب ) أي : ما كنت تظن قبل إنزال الوحي إليك أن الوحي ينزل عليك ، ( إلا رحمة من ربك ) أي : إنما نزل الوحي عليك من الله من رحمته بك وبالعباد بسببك ، فإذا منحك بهذه النعمة العظيمة ( فلا تكونن ظهيرا ) أي : معينا ) للكافرين ) [ أي ] : ولكن فارقهم ونابذهم وخالفهم .
