Quran 30:9

Surah Ar-Room, Verse 9

أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَثَارُوا۟ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَعَمَرُوهَآ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَمَرُوهَا وَجَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

Word by word

أَوَلَمْ awalam Have not يَسِيرُوا۟ yasīrū they traveled فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth فَيَنظُرُوا۟ fayanẓurū and observed كَيْفَ kayfa how كَانَ kāna was عَـٰقِبَةُ ʿāqibatu (the) end ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those مِن min before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ qablihim before them كَانُوٓا۟ kānū They were أَشَدَّ ashadda mightier مِنْهُمْ min'hum than them قُوَّةًۭ quwwatan (in) strength وَأَثَارُوا۟ wa-athārū and they dug ٱلْأَرْضَ l-arḍa the earth وَعَمَرُوهَآ waʿamarūhā and built (on) it أَكْثَرَ akthara more مِمَّا mimmā than what عَمَرُوهَا ʿamarūhā they have built (on) it وَجَآءَتْهُمْ wajāathum And came (to) them رُسُلُهُم rusuluhum their Messengers بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ bil-bayināti with clear proofs فَمَا famā So not كَانَ kāna was ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ liyaẓlimahum to wrong them وَلَـٰكِن walākin but كَانُوٓا۟ kānū they were أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves يَظْلِمُونَ yaẓlimūna (doing) wrong

Transliteration

Awa lam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihimkanoo ashadda minhum quwwatan waatharoo al-ardawaAAamarooha akthara mimma AAamarooha wajaat-humrusuluhum bilbayyinati fama kana Allahuliyathlimahum walakin kanoo anfusahumyathlimoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? They were stronger than these in power, and they dug the earth and built upon it more than these have built. Messengers of their own came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Surely Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). (Which they rejected, to their own destruction): It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم نبههم على صدق رسله فيما جاءوا به عنه ، بما أيدهم به من المعجزات ، والدلائل الواضحات ، من إهلاك من كفر بهم ، ونجاة من صدقهم ، فقال : ( أولم يسيروا في الأرض ) أي : بأفهامهم وعقولهم ونظرهم وسماعهم أخبار الماضين; ولهذا قال : ( فينظروا كيف كان عاقبة الذين من قبلهم كانوا أشد منهم قوة ) أي : كانت الأمم الماضية والقرون السالفة أشد منكم - أيها المبعوث إليهم محمد صلوات الله وسلامه عليه وأكثر أموالا وأولادا ، وما أوتيتم معشار ما أوتوا ، ومكنوا في الدنيا تمكينا لم تبلغوا إليه ، وعمروا فيها أعمارا طوالا فعمروها أكثر منكم . واستغلوها أكثر من استغلالكم ، ومع هذا لما جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات وفرحوا بما أوتوا ، أخذهم الله بذنوبهم ، وما كان لهم من الله من واق ، ولا حالت أموالهم ولا أولادهم بينهم وبين بأس الله ، ولا دفعوا عنهم مثقال ذرة ، وما كان الله ليظلمهم فيما أحل بهم من العذاب والنكال ( ولكن كانوا أنفسهم يظلمون ) أي : وإنما أوتوا من أنفسهم حيث كذبوا بآيات الله ، واستهزءوا بها ، وما ذاك إلا بسبب ذنوبهم السالفة وتكذيبهم المتقدم; ولهذا قال :
