Quran 34:21

Surah Saba, Verse 21

وَمَا كَانَ لَهُۥ عَلَيْهِم مِّن سُلْطَٰنٍ إِلَّا لِنَعْلَمَ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِمَّنْ هُوَ مِنْهَا فِى شَكٍّ وَرَبُّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَفِيظٌ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not كَانَ kāna was لَهُۥ lahu for him عَلَيْهِم ʿalayhim over them مِّن min any سُلْطَـٰنٍ sul'ṭānin authority إِلَّا illā except لِنَعْلَمَ linaʿlama that We (might) make evident مَن man who يُؤْمِنُ yu'minu believes بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ bil-ākhirati in the Hereafter مِمَّنْ mimman from (one) who هُوَ huwa [he] مِنْهَا min'hā about it فِى fī (is) in شَكٍّۢ ۗ shakkin doubt وَرَبُّكَ warabbuka And your Lord عَلَىٰ ʿalā over كُلِّ kulli all شَىْءٍ shayin things حَفِيظٌۭ ḥafīẓun (is) a Guardian

Transliteration

Wama kana lahu AAalayhim minsultanin illa linaAAlama man yu/minu bil-akhiratimimman huwa minha fee shakkin warabbuka AAala kullishay-in hafeeth

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And he had no warrant whatsoever against them, save that We would know him who believeth in the Hereafter from him who is in doubt thereof; and thy Lord (O Muhammad) taketh note of all things.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

But he had no authority over them,- except that We might test the man who believes in the Hereafter from him who is in doubt concerning it: and thy Lord doth watch over all things.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( وما كان له عليهم من سلطان ) قال ابن عباس : أي من حجة .

وقال الحسن البصري : والله ما ضربهم بعصا ، ولا أكرههم على شيء ، وما كان إلا غرورا وأماني دعاهم إليها فأجابوه .

وقوله : ( إلا لنعلم من يؤمن بالآخرة ممن هو منها في شك ) أي : إنما سلطناه عليهم ليظهر أمر من هو مؤمن بالآخرة وقيامها والحساب فيها والجزاء ، فيحسن عبادة ربه عز وجل في الدنيا ، ممن هو منها في شك .

وقوله : ( وربك على كل شيء حفيظ ) أي : ومع حفظه ضل من ضل من اتباع إبليس ، وبحفظه وكلاءته سلم من سلم من المؤمنين أتباع الرسل .
