Quran 34:40

Surah Saba, Verse 40

وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يَقُولُ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ أَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِيَّاكُمْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ

Word by word

وَيَوْمَ wayawma And (the) Day يَحْشُرُهُمْ yaḥshuruhum He will gather them جَمِيعًۭا jamīʿan all ثُمَّ thumma then يَقُولُ yaqūlu He will say لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ lil'malāikati to the Angels أَهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ahāulāi Were these you إِيَّاكُمْ iyyākum Were these you كَانُوا۟ kānū they were يَعْبُدُونَ yaʿbudūna worshipping

Transliteration

Wayawma yahshuruhum jameeAAan thummayaqoolu lilmala-ikati ahaola-i iyyakumkanoo yaAAbudoon

Translations

And on the day when He will gather them all together, He will say unto the angels: Did these worship you?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

One Day He will gather them all together, and say to the angels, "Was it you that these men used to worship?"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى أنه يقرع المشركين يوم القيامة على رءوس الخلائق ، فيسأل الملائكة الذين كان المشركون يزعمون أنهم يعبدون الأنداد التي هي على صورة الملائكة ليقربوهم إلى الله زلفى ، فيقول للملائكة : ( أهؤلاء إياكم كانوا يعبدون ) ؟ أي : أنتم أمرتم هؤلاء بعبادتكم ؟ كما قال في سورة الفرقان : ( أأنتم أضللتم عبادي هؤلاء أم هم ضلوا السبيل ) [ الفرقان : 17 ] ، وكما يقول لعيسى : ( أأنت قلت للناس اتخذوني وأمي إلهين من دون الله قال سبحانك ما يكون لي أن أقول ما ليس لي بحق ) [ المائدة : 116 ] .
