Quran 34:41

Surah Saba, Verse 41

قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَكَ أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا مِن دُونِهِم بَلْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ ٱلْجِنَّ أَكْثَرُهُم بِهِم مُّؤْمِنُونَ

Word by word

قَالُوا۟ qālū They will say سُبْحَـٰنَكَ sub'ḥānaka Glory be to You أَنتَ anta You وَلِيُّنَا waliyyunā (are) our Protector مِن min not them دُونِهِم ۖ dūnihim not them بَلْ bal Nay كَانُوا۟ kānū they used يَعْبُدُونَ yaʿbudūna (to) worship ٱلْجِنَّ ۖ l-jina the jinn أَكْثَرُهُم aktharuhum most of them بِهِم bihim in them مُّؤْمِنُونَ mu'minūna (were) believers

Transliteration

Qaloo subhanaka anta waliyyunamin doonihim bal kanoo yaAAbudoona aljinna aktharuhumbihim mu/minoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They will say: Be Thou Glorified. Thou (alone) art our Guardian, not them! Nay, but they worshipped the jinn; most of them were believers in them.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They will say, "Glory to Thee! our (tie) is with Thee - as Protector - not with them. Nay, but they worshipped the Jinns: most of them believed in them."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وهكذا تقول الملائكة : ( سبحانك ) أي : تعاليت وتقدست عن أن يكون معك إله ( أنت ولينا من دونهم ) أي : نحن عبيدك ونبرأ إليك من هؤلاء ، ( بل كانوا يعبدون الجن ) يعنون : الشياطين; لأنهم هم الذين يزينون لهم عبادة الأوثان ويضلونهم ، ( أكثرهم بهم مؤمنون ) ، كما قال تعالى : ( إن يدعون من دونه إلا إناثا وإن يدعون إلا شيطانا مريدا ) [ النساء : 117 ] .
