Quran 35:12

وَمَا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْبَحْرَانِ هَٰذَا عَذْبٌ فُرَاتٌ سَآئِغٌ شَرَابُهُۥ وَهَٰذَا مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌ وَمِن كُلٍّ تَأْكُلُونَ لَحْمًا طَرِيًّا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُونَ حِلْيَةً تَلْبَسُونَهَا وَتَرَى ٱلْفُلْكَ فِيهِ مَوَاخِرَ لِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not يَسْتَوِى yastawī are alike ٱلْبَحْرَانِ l-baḥrāni the two seas هَـٰذَا hādhā This عَذْبٌۭ ʿadhbun (is) fresh فُرَاتٌۭ furātun sweet سَآئِغٌۭ sāighun pleasant شَرَابُهُۥ sharābuhu its drink وَهَـٰذَا wahādhā and this مِلْحٌ mil'ḥun salty أُجَاجٌۭ ۖ ujājun (and) bitter وَمِن wamin And from كُلٍّۢ kullin each تَأْكُلُونَ takulūna you eat لَحْمًۭا laḥman meat طَرِيًّۭا ṭariyyan fresh وَتَسْتَخْرِجُونَ watastakhrijūna and you extract حِلْيَةًۭ ḥil'yatan ornaments تَلْبَسُونَهَا ۖ talbasūnahā you wear them وَتَرَى watarā and you see ٱلْفُلْكَ l-ful'ka the ships فِيهِ fīhi in it مَوَاخِرَ mawākhira cleaving لِتَبْتَغُوا۟ litabtaghū so that you may seek مِن min of فَضْلِهِۦ faḍlihi His Bounty وَلَعَلَّكُمْ walaʿallakum and that you may تَشْكُرُونَ tashkurūna be grateful

Transliteration

Wama yastawee albahranihatha AAathbun furatun sa-ighun sharabuhuwahatha milhun ojajun wamin kullinta/kuloona lahman tariyyan watastakhrijoona hilyatantalbasoonaha watara alfulka feehi mawakhiralitabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroon

Translations

And the two seas are not alike: this, fresh, sweet, good to drink, this (other) bitter, salt. And from them both ye eat fresh meat and derive the ornament that ye wear. And thou seest the ship cleaving them with its prow that ye may seek of His bounty, and that haply ye may give thanks.

Nor are the two bodies of flowing water alike,- the one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, and the other, salt and bitter. Yet from each (kind of water) do ye eat flesh fresh and tender, and ye extract ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the Bounty of Allah that ye may be grateful.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى منبها على قدرته العظيمة في خلقه الأشياء المختلفة : وخلق البحرين العذب الزلال ، وهو هذه الأنهار السارحة بين الناس ، من كبار وصغار ، بحسب الحاجة إليها في الأقاليم والأمصار ، والعمران والبراري والقفار ، وهي عذبة سائغ شرابها لمن أراد ذلك ، ( وهذا ملح أجاج ) ، وهو البحر الساكن الذي تسير فيه السفن الكبار ، وإنما تكون مالحة زعاقا مرة ، ولهذا قال : ( وهذا ملح أجاج ) ، أي : مر .

ثم قال : ( ومن كل تأكلون لحما طريا ) يعني : السمك ، ( وتستخرجون حلية تلبسونها ) ، كما قال تعالى : ( يخرج منهما اللؤلؤ والمرجان فبأي آلاء ربكما تكذبان ) [ الرحمن : 22 ، 23 ] .

وقوله : ( وترى الفلك فيه مواخر ) أي : تمخره وتشقه بحيزومها ، وهو مقدمها المسنم الذي يشبه جؤجؤ الطير - وهو : صدره .

وقال مجاهد : تمخر الريح السفن ، ولا يمخر الريح من السفن إلا العظام .

وقوله : ( لتبتغوا من فضله ) أي : بأسفاركم بالتجارة ، من قطر إلى قطر ، وإقليم إلى إقليم ، ( ولعلكم تشكرون ) أي تشكرون ربكم على تسخيره لكم هذا الخلق العظيم ، وهو البحر ، تتصرفون فيه كيف شئتم ، وتذهبون أين أردتم ، ولا يمتنع عليكم شيء منه ، بل بقدرته قد سخر لكم ما في السماوات وما في الأرض ، الجميع من فضله ومن رحمته .
