Quran 35:42

Surah Faatir, Verse 42

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ لَئِن جَآءَهُمْ نَذِيرٌ لَّيَكُونُنَّ أَهْدَىٰ مِنْ إِحْدَى ٱلْأُمَمِ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ نَذِيرٌ مَّا زَادَهُمْ إِلَّا نُفُورًا

Word by word

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ wa-aqsamū And they swore بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi by Allah جَهْدَ jahda (the) strongest أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ aymānihim (of) their oaths لَئِن la-in that if جَآءَهُمْ jāahum came to them نَذِيرٌۭ nadhīrun a warner لَّيَكُونُنَّ layakūnunna surely, they would be أَهْدَىٰ ahdā more guided مِنْ min than إِحْدَى iḥ'dā any ٱلْأُمَمِ ۖ l-umami (of) the nations فَلَمَّا falammā But when جَآءَهُمْ jāahum came to them نَذِيرٌۭ nadhīrun a warner مَّا mā not زَادَهُمْ zādahum it increased them إِلَّا illā but نُفُورًا nufūran (in) aversion

Transliteration

Waaqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihimla-in jaahum natheerun layakoonunna ahda minihda al-omami falamma jaahum natheerunma zadahum illa nufoora

And they swore by Allah, their most binding oath, that if a warner came unto them they would be more tractable than any of the nations; yet, when a warner came unto them it aroused in them naught save repugnance,

They swore their strongest oaths by Allah that if a warner came to them, they would follow his guidance better than any (other) of the Peoples: But when a warner came to them, it has only increased their flight (from righteousness),-

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عن قريش والعرب أنهم أقسموا بالله جهد أيمانهم ، قبل إرسال الرسول إليهم : ( لئن جاءهم نذير ليكونن أهدى من إحدى الأمم ) أي : من جميع الأمم الذين أرسل إليهم الرسل . قاله الضحاك وغيره ، كقوله تعالى : ( أن تقولوا إنما أنزل الكتاب على طائفتين من قبلنا وإن كنا عن دراستهم لغافلين أو تقولوا لو أنا أنزل علينا الكتاب لكنا أهدى منهم فقد جاءكم بينة من ربكم وهدى ورحمة فمن أظلم ممن كذب بآيات الله وصدف عنها ) [ الأنعام : 156 ، 157 ] ، وكقوله تعالى : ( وإن كانوا ليقولون لو أن عندنا ذكرا من الأولين لكنا عباد الله المخلصين فكفروا به فسوف يعلمون ) [ الصافات : 167 - 170 ] .

قال الله تعالى : ( فلما جاءهم نذير ) - وهو : محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم - بما أنزل معه من الكتاب العظيم ، وهو القرآن المبين ، ( ما زادهم إلا نفورا ) ، أي : ما ازدادوا إلا كفرا إلى كفرهم ، ثم بين ذلك بقوله :
