Quran 35:43

Surah Faatir, Verse 43

ٱسْتِكْبَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَكْرَ ٱلسَّيِّئِ وَلَا يَحِيقُ ٱلْمَكْرُ ٱلسَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِۦ فَهَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَحْوِيلًا

Word by word

ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا is'tik'bāran (Due to) arrogance فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land وَمَكْرَ wamakra and plotting ٱلسَّيِّئِ ۚ l-sayi-i (of) the evil وَلَا walā but not يَحِيقُ yaḥīqu encompasses ٱلْمَكْرُ l-makru the plot ٱلسَّيِّئُ l-sayi-u (of) the evil إِلَّا illā except بِأَهْلِهِۦ ۚ bi-ahlihi its own people فَهَلْ fahal Then do يَنظُرُونَ yanẓurūna they wait إِلَّا illā except سُنَّتَ sunnata (the) way ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۚ l-awalīna (of) the former (people) فَلَن falan But never تَجِدَ tajida you will find لِسُنَّتِ lisunnati in (the) way ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah تَبْدِيلًۭا ۖ tabdīlan any change وَلَن walan and never تَجِدَ tajida you will find لِسُنَّتِ lisunnati in (the) way ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah تَحْوِيلًا taḥwīlan any alteration

Transliteration

Istikbaran fee al-ardi wamakraassayyi-i wala yaheequ almakru assayyi-oilla bi-ahlihi fahal yanthuroona illasunnata al-awwaleena falan tajida lisunnati Allahitabdeelan walan tajida lisunnati Allahi tahweela

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(Shown in their) behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil; and the evil plot encloseth but the men who make it. Then, can they expect aught save the treatment of the folk of old? Thou wilt not find for Allah's way of treatment any substitute, nor wilt thou find for Allah's way of treatment aught of power to change.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

On account of their arrogance in the land and their plotting of Evil, but the plotting of Evil will hem in only the authors thereof. Now are they but looking for the way the ancients were dealt with? But no change wilt thou find in Allah's way (of dealing): no turning off wilt thou find in Allah's way (of dealing).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( استكبارا في الأرض ) أي : استكبروا عن اتباع آيات الله ، ( ومكر السيئ ) أي : ومكروا بالناس في صدهم إياهم عن سبيل الله ، ( ولا يحيق المكر السيئ إلا بأهله ) [ أي : وما يعود وبال ذلك إلا عليهم أنفسهم دون غيرهم .

قال ابن أبي حاتم : ذكر علي بن الحسين ، حدثنا ابن أبي عمر ، حدثنا سفيان ، عن أبي زكريا الكوفي عن رجل حدثه ، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : " إياك ومكر السيئ ، فإنه لا يحيق المكر السيئ إلا بأهله ] ، ولهم من الله طالب " ، ، وقد قال محمد بن كعب القرظي : ثلاث من فعلهن لم ينج حتى ينزل به من مكر أو بغي أو نكث ، وتصديقها في كتاب الله : ( ولا يحيق المكر السيئ إلا بأهله ) . ( إنما بغيكم على أنفسكم ) [ يونس : 23 ] ، ( فمن نكث فإنما ينكث على نفسه ) [ الفتح : 10 ] .

وقوله : ( فهل ينظرون إلا سنة الأولين ) يعني عقوبة الله لهم على تكذيبهم رسله ومخالفتهم أمره ، ( فلن تجد لسنة الله تبديلا ) أي لا تغير ولا تبدل ، بل هي جارية كذلك في كل مكذب ، ( ولن تجد لسنة الله تحويلا ) أي : ( وإذا أراد الله بقوم سوءا فلا مرد له ) [ الرعد : 11 ] ، ولا يكشف ذلك عنهم ويحوله عنهم أحد .
