Quran 35:45

Surah Faatir, Verse 45

وَلَوْ يُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ مَا تَرَكَ عَلَىٰ ظَهْرِهَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ وَلَٰكِن يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِۦ بَصِيرًۢا

Word by word

وَلَوْ walaw And if يُؤَاخِذُ yuākhidhu Allah (were to) punish ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah (were to) punish ٱلنَّاسَ l-nāsa the people بِمَا bimā for what كَسَبُوا۟ kasabū they have earned مَا mā not تَرَكَ taraka He would leave عَلَىٰ ʿalā on ظَهْرِهَا ẓahrihā its back مِن min any دَآبَّةٍۢ dābbatin creature وَلَـٰكِن walākin But يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ yu-akhiruhum He gives them respite إِلَىٰٓ ilā till أَجَلٍۢ ajalin a term مُّسَمًّۭى ۖ musamman appointed فَإِذَا fa-idhā And when جَآءَ jāa comes أَجَلُهُمْ ajaluhum their term فَإِنَّ fa-inna then indeed ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah كَانَ kāna is بِعِبَادِهِۦ biʿibādihi of His slaves بَصِيرًۢا baṣīran All-Seer

Transliteration

Walaw yu-akhithu Allahuannasa bima kasaboo ma taraka AAalathahriha min dabbatin walakinyu-akhkhiruhum ila ajalin musamman fa-itha jaaajaluhum fa-inna Allaha kana biAAibadihi baseera

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

If Allah took mankind to task by that which they deserve, He would not leave a living creature on the surface of the earth; but He reprieveth them unto an appointed term, and when their term cometh - then verily (they will know that) Allah is ever Seer of His slaves.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If Allah were to punish men according to what they deserve. He would not leave on the back of the (earth) a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: when their Term expires, verily Allah has in His sight all His Servants.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( ولو يؤاخذ الله الناس بما كسبوا ما ترك على ظهرها من دابة ) أي : لو آخذهم بجميع ذنوبهم ، لأهلك جميع أهل الأرض ، وما يملكونه من دواب وأرزاق .

قال ابن أبي حاتم : حدثنا أحمد بن سنان ، حدثنا عبد الرحمن ، حدثنا سفيان الثوري ، عن أبي إسحاق ، عن أبي الأحوص ، عن عبد الله قال : كاد الجعل أن يعذب في جحره بذنب ابن آدم ، ثم قرأ : ( ولو يؤاخذ الله الناس بما كسبوا ما ترك على ظهرها من دابة ) .

وقال سعيد بن جبير ، والسدي في قوله : ( ما ترك على ظهرها من دابة ) أي : لما سقاهم المطر ، فماتت جميع الدواب .

( ولكن يؤخرهم إلى أجل مسمى ) أي : ولكن ينظرهم إلى يوم القيامة ، فيحاسبهم يومئذ ، ويوفي كل عامل بعمله ، فيجازي بالثواب أهل الطاعة ، وبالعقاب أهل المعصية ; ولهذا قال تعالى : ( فإذا جاء أجلهم فإن الله كان بعباده بصيرا ) .
