Quran 4:108

Surah An-Nisaa, Verse 108

يَسْتَخْفُونَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَا يَسْتَخْفُونَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مَعَهُمْ إِذْ يُبَيِّتُونَ مَا لَا يَرْضَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطًا

Word by word

يَسْتَخْفُونَ yastakhfūna They seek to hide مِنَ mina from ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi the people وَلَا walā but not يَسْتَخْفُونَ yastakhfūna (can) they hide مِنَ mina from ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah وَهُوَ wahuwa and He مَعَهُمْ maʿahum (is) with them إِذْ idh when يُبَيِّتُونَ yubayyitūna they plot by night مَا mā what لَا lā not يَرْضَىٰ yarḍā (does) he approve مِنَ mina of ٱلْقَوْلِ ۚ l-qawli the word وَكَانَ wakāna And is ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah بِمَا bimā of what يَعْمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna they do مُحِيطًا muḥīṭan All-Encompassing

Transliteration

Yastakhfoona mina annasi walayastakhfoona mina Allahi wahuwa maAAahum ithyubayyitoona ma la yarda mina alqawli wakanaAllahu bima yaAAmaloona muheeta

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They seek to hide from men and seek not to hide from Allah. He is with them when by night they hold discourse displeasing unto Him. Allah ever surroundeth what they do.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They may hide (Their crimes) from men, but they cannot hide (Them) from Allah, seeing that He is in their midst when they plot by night, in words that He cannot approve: And Allah Doth compass round all that they do.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( يستخفون من الناس ولا يستخفون من الله [ وهو معهم إذ يبيتون ما لا يرضى من القول ] ) الآية ، هذا إنكار على المنافقين في كونهم يستخفون بقبائحهم من الناس لئلا ينكروا عليهم ، ويجاهرون الله بها لأنه مطلع على سرائرهم وعالم بما في ضمائرهم ; ولهذا قال : ( وهو معهم إذ يبيتون ما لا يرضى من القول وكان الله بما يعملون محيطا ) تهديد لهم ووعيد .
