Quran 4:44

Surah An-Nisaa, Verse 44

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِيبًا مِّنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ يَشْتَرُونَ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن تَضِلُّوا۟ ٱلسَّبِيلَ

Word by word

أَلَمْ alam Did not تَرَ tara you see إِلَى ilā [towards] ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who أُوتُوا۟ ūtū were given نَصِيبًۭا naṣīban a portion مِّنَ mina of ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ l-kitābi the Book يَشْتَرُونَ yashtarūna purchasing ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَ l-ḍalālata [the] error وَيُرِيدُونَ wayurīdūna and wishing أَن an that تَضِلُّوا۟ taḍillū you stray ٱلسَّبِيلَ l-sabīla (from) the way

Transliteration

Alam tara ila allatheena ootoonaseeban mina alkitabi yashtaroona addalalatawayureedoona an tadilloo assabeel

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Seest thou not those unto whom a portion of the Scripture hath been given, how they purchase error, and seek to make you (Muslims) err from the right way?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who were given a portion of the Book? they traffic in error, and wish that ye should lose the right path.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عن اليهود عليهم لعائن الله المتتابعة إلى يوم القيامة ، أنهم يشترون الضلالة بالهدى ويعرضون عما أنزل الله على رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم ويتركون ما بأيديهم من العلم عن الأنبياء الأولين في صفة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ليشتروا به ثمنا قليلا من حطام الدنيا ( ويريدون أن تضلوا السبيل ) أي يودون لو تكفرون بما أنزل عليكم أيها المؤمنون وتتركون ما أنتم عليه من الهدى والعلم النافع .
