Quran 4:74

Surah An-Nisaa, Verse 74

فَلْيُقَٰتِلْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَشْرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَمَن يُقَٰتِلْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَيُقْتَلْ أَوْ يَغْلِبْ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا

Word by word

۞ فَلْيُقَـٰتِلْ falyuqātil So let fight فِى fī in سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who يَشْرُونَ yashrūna sell ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ l-ḥayata the life ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā (of) the world بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ bil-ākhirati for the Hereafter وَمَن waman And whoever يُقَـٰتِلْ yuqātil fights فِى fī in سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah فَيُقْتَلْ fayuq'tal then he is killed أَوْ aw or يَغْلِبْ yaghlib achieves victory فَسَوْفَ fasawfa then soon نُؤْتِيهِ nu'tīhi We will grant him أَجْرًا ajran a reward عَظِيمًۭا ʿaẓīman a great

Transliteration

Falyuqatil fee sabeeli Allahiallatheena yashroona alhayata addunyabil-akhirati waman yuqatil fee sabeeli Allahifayuqtal aw yaghlib fasawfa nu/teehi ajran AAatheema

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Let those fight in the cause of Allah Who sell the life of this world for the hereafter. To him who fighteth in the cause of Allah,- whether he is slain or gets victory - Soon shall We give him a reward of great (value).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( فليقاتل ) أي : المؤمن النافر ( في سبيل الله الذين يشرون الحياة الدنيا بالآخرة ) أي : يبيعون دينهم بعرض قليل من الدنيا ، وما ذلك إلا لكفرهم وعدم إيمانهم .

ثم قال تعالى : ( ومن يقاتل في سبيل الله فيقتل أو يغلب فسوف نؤتيه أجرا عظيما ) أي : كل من قاتل في سبيل الله - سواء قتل أو غلب وسلب - فله عند الله مثوبة عظيمة وأجر جزيل ، كما ثبت في الصحيحين وتكفل الله للمجاهد في سبيله ، إن توفاه أن يدخله الجنة ، أو يرجعه إلى مسكنه الذي خرج منه نائلا ما نال من أجر أو غنيمة .
