Quran 40:52

Surah Al-Ghaafir, Verse 52

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَلَهُمُ ٱللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوٓءُ ٱلدَّارِ

Word by word

يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day لَا lā not يَنفَعُ yanfaʿu will benefit ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ ۖ maʿdhiratuhum their excuse وَلَهُمُ walahumu and for them ٱللَّعْنَةُ l-laʿnatu (is) the curse وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them سُوٓءُ sūu (is the) worst ٱلدَّارِ l-dāri home

Transliteration

Yawma la yanfaAAu aththalimeenamaAAthiratuhum walahumu allaAAnatu walahum soo-o addar

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

The day when their excuse availeth not the evil-doers, and theirs is the curse, and theirs the ill abode.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Day when no profit will it be to Wrong-doers to present their excuses, but they will (only) have the Curse and the Home of Misery.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( يوم لا ينفع الظالمين معذرتهم ) بدل من قوله : ( ويوم يقوم الأشهاد ) .

وقرأ آخرون : " يوم " بالرفع ، كأنه فسره به . ( ويوم يقوم الأشهاد يوم لا ينفع الظالمين ) ، وهم المشركون ) معذرتهم ) أي : لا يقبل منهم عذر ولا فدية ، ( ولهم اللعنة ) أي : الإبعاد والطرد من الرحمة ، ( ولهم سوء الدار ) وهي النار . قاله السدي ، بئس المنزل والمقيل .

وقال علي بن أبي طلحة ، عن ابن عباس : ( ولهم سوء الدار ) أي : سوء العاقبة .
