Quran 42:17

Surah Ash-Shura, Verse 17

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ قَرِيبٌ

Word by word

ٱللَّهُ al-lahu Allah ٱلَّذِىٓ alladhī (is) the One Who أَنزَلَ anzala (has) sent down ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ l-kitāba the Book بِٱلْحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi in truth وَٱلْمِيزَانَ ۗ wal-mīzāna and the Balance وَمَا wamā And what يُدْرِيكَ yud'rīka will make you know لَعَلَّ laʿalla Perhaps ٱلسَّاعَةَ l-sāʿata the Hour قَرِيبٌۭ qarībun (is) near

Transliteration

Allahu allathee anzala alkitababilhaqqi walmeezani wamayudreeka laAAalla assaAAata qareeb

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Allah it is Who hath revealed the Scripture with truth, and the Balance. How canst thou know? It may be that the Hour is nigh.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

It is Allah Who has sent down the Book in Truth, and the Balance (by which to weigh conduct). And what will make thee realise that perhaps the Hour is close at hand?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( الله الذي أنزل الكتاب بالحق ) يعني : الكتب المنزلة من عنده على أنبيائه ( والميزان ) ، وهو : العدل والإنصاف ، قاله مجاهد ، وقتادة . وهذه كقوله تعالى : ( لقد أرسلنا رسلنا بالبينات وأنزلنا معهم الكتاب والميزان ليقوم الناس بالقسط ) [ الحديد : 25 ] وقوله : ( والسماء رفعها ووضع الميزان . ألا تطغوا في الميزان . وأقيموا الوزن بالقسط ولا تخسروا الميزان ) [ الرحمن : 7 - 9 ] .

وقوله : ( وما يدريك لعل الساعة قريب ) فيه ترغيب فيها ، وترهيب منها ، وتزهيد في الدنيا .
