Quran 42:49

Surah Ash-Shura, Verse 49

لِّلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ يَهَبُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ إِنَٰثًا وَيَهَبُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ٱلذُّكُورَ

Word by word

لِّلَّهِ lillahi To Allah مُلْكُ mul'ku (belongs the) dominion ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ wal-arḍi and the earth يَخْلُقُ yakhluqu He creates مَا mā what يَشَآءُ ۚ yashāu He wills يَهَبُ yahabu He grants لِمَن liman to whom يَشَآءُ yashāu He wills إِنَـٰثًۭا ināthan females وَيَهَبُ wayahabu and He grants لِمَن liman to whom يَشَآءُ yashāu He wills ٱلذُّكُورَ l-dhukūra [the] males

Transliteration

Lillahi mulku assamawatiwal-ardi yakhluqu ma yashao yahabuliman yashao inathan wayahabu liman yashao aththukoor

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Unto Allah belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. He createth what He will. He bestoweth female (offspring) upon whom He will, and bestoweth male (offspring) upon whom He will;

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills (and plans). He bestows (children) male or female according to His Will (and Plan),

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى أنه خالق السموات والأرض ومالكهما والمتصرف فيهما ، وأنه ما شاء كان ، وما لم يشأ لم يكن ، وأنه يعطي من يشاء ، ويمنع من يشاء ، ولا مانع لما أعطى ، ولا معطي لما منع ، وأنه يخلق ما يشاء ، و ( يهب لمن يشاء إناثا ) أي : يرزقه البنات فقط - قال البغوي : ومنهم لوط ، عليه السلام ( ويهب لمن يشاء الذكور ) أي : يرزقه البنين فقط . قال البغوي : كإبراهيم الخليل ، عليه السلام - لم يولد له أنثى ، .
