Quran 46:26

Surah Al-Ahqaf, Verse 26

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّٰهُمْ فِيمَآ إِن مَّكَّنَّٰكُمْ فِيهِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَمْعًا وَأَبْصَٰرًا وَأَفْـِٔدَةً فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَلَآ أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ وَلَآ أَفْـِٔدَتُهُم مِّن شَىْءٍ إِذْ كَانُوا۟ يَجْحَدُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Word by word

وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly مَكَّنَّـٰهُمْ makkannāhum We had established them فِيمَآ fīmā in what إِن in not مَّكَّنَّـٰكُمْ makkannākum We have established you فِيهِ fīhi in it وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made لَهُمْ lahum for them سَمْعًۭا samʿan hearing وَأَبْصَـٰرًۭا wa-abṣāran and vision وَأَفْـِٔدَةًۭ wa-afidatan and hearts فَمَآ famā But not أَغْنَىٰ aghnā availed عَنْهُمْ ʿanhum them سَمْعُهُمْ samʿuhum their hearing وَلَآ walā and not أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ abṣāruhum their vision وَلَآ walā and not أَفْـِٔدَتُهُم afidatuhum their hearts مِّن min any شَىْءٍ shayin thing إِذْ idh when كَانُوا۟ kānū they were يَجْحَدُونَ yajḥadūna rejecting بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti (the) Signs ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah وَحَاقَ waḥāqa and enveloped بِهِم bihim them مَّا mā what كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to بِهِۦ bihi [at it] يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ yastahziūna ridicule

Transliteration

Walaqad makkannahum feema inmakkannakum feehi wajaAAalna lahum samAAan waabsaranwaaf-idatan fama aghna AAanhum samAAuhum walaabsaruhum wala af-idatuhum min shay-in ith kanooyajhadoona bi-ayati Allahi wahaqabihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon

Translations

And verily We had empowered them with that wherewith We have not empowered you, and had assigned them ears and eyes and hearts; but their ears and eyes and hearts availed them naught since they denied the revelations of Allah; and what they used to mock befell them.

And We had firmly established them in a (prosperity and) power which We have not given to you (ye Quraish!) and We had endowed them with (faculties of) hearing, seeing, heart and intellect: but of no profit to them were their (faculties of) hearing, sight, and heart and intellect, when they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah; and they were (completely) encircled by that which they used to mock at!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : ولقد مكنا الأمم السالفة في الدنيا من الأموال والأولاد ، وأعطيناهم منها ما لم نعطكم مثله ولا قريبا منه ، ( وجعلنا لهم سمعا وأبصارا وأفئدة فما أغنى عنهم سمعهم ولا أبصارهم ولا أفئدتهم من شيء إذ كانوا يجحدون بآيات الله وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزئون ) أي : وأحاط بهم العذاب والنكال الذي كانوا يكذبون به ويستبعدون وقوعه ، أي : فاحذروا أيها المخاطبون أن تكونوا مثلهم ، فيصيبكم مثل ما أصابهم من العذاب في الدنيا والآخرة .
