Quran 46:27

Surah Al-Ahqaf, Verse 27

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا مَا حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ وَصَرَّفْنَا ٱلْـَٔايَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

Word by word

وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly أَهْلَكْنَا ahlaknā We destroyed مَا mā what حَوْلَكُم ḥawlakum surrounds you مِّنَ mina of ٱلْقُرَىٰ l-qurā the towns وَصَرَّفْنَا waṣarrafnā and We have diversified ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ l-āyāti the Signs لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum that they may يَرْجِعُونَ yarjiʿūna return

Transliteration

Walaqad ahlakna ma hawlakummina alqura wasarrafna al-ayatilaAAallahum yarjiAAoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And verily We have destroyed townships round about you, and displayed (for them) Our revelation, that haply they might return.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We destroyed aforetime populations round about you; and We have shown the Signs in various ways, that they may turn (to Us).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( ولقد أهلكنا ما حولكم من القرى ) يعني : أهل مكة ، قد أهلك الله الأمم المكذبة بالرسل مما حولها كعاد ، وكانوا بالأحقاف بحضرموت عند اليمن وثمود ، وكانت منازلهم بينهم وبين الشام ، وكذلك سبأ وهم أهل اليمن ، ومدين وكانت في طريقهم وممرهم إلى غزة ، وكذلك بحيرة قوم لوط ، كانوا يمرون بها أيضا .

وقوله : ( وصرفنا الآيات ) أي : بيناها ووضحناها ، ( لعلهم يرجعون)
