Quran 47:16

Surah Muhammad, Verse 16

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا خَرَجُوا۟ مِنْ عِندِكَ قَالُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ مَاذَا قَالَ ءَانِفًا أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ

Word by word

وَمِنْهُم wamin'hum And among them مَّن man (are some) who يَسْتَمِعُ yastamiʿu listen إِلَيْكَ ilayka to you حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā until إِذَا idhā when خَرَجُوا۟ kharajū they depart مِنْ min from عِندِكَ ʿindika you قَالُوا۟ qālū they say لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who أُوتُوا۟ ūtū were given ٱلْعِلْمَ l-ʿil'ma the knowledge مَاذَا mādhā What قَالَ qāla (has) he said ءَانِفًا ۚ ānifan just now أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) the ones طَبَعَ ṭabaʿa Allah has set a seal ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah has set a seal عَلَىٰ ʿalā upon قُلُوبِهِمْ qulūbihim their hearts وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ wa-ittabaʿū and they follow أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ahwāahum their desires

Transliteration

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka hattaitha kharajoo min AAindika qaloo lillatheenaootoo alAAilma matha qala anifan ola-ikaallatheena tabaAAa Allahu AAalaquloobihim wattabaAAoo ahwaahum

Translations

Among them are some who give ear unto thee (Muhammad) till, when they go forth from thy presence they say unto those who have been given knowledge: What was that he said just now? Those are they whose hearts Allah hath sealed, and they follow their own lusts.

And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, "What is it he said just then?" Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن المنافقين في بلادتهم وقلة فهمهم حيث كانوا يجلسون إلى رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ويستمعون كلامه ولا يفهمون منه شيئا ، فإذا خرجوا من عنده ( قالوا للذين أوتوا العلم ) من الصحابة : ( ماذا قال آنفا ) أي : الساعة ، لا يعقلون ما يقال ، ولا يكترثون له .

قال الله تعالى : ( أولئك الذين طبع الله على قلوبهم واتبعوا أهواءهم ) أي : فلا فهم صحيح ، ولا قصد صحيح .
