Quran 58:4

Surah Al-Mujaadila, Verse 4

فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Word by word

فَمَن faman Then whoever لَّمْ lam (does) not يَجِدْ yajid find فَصِيَامُ faṣiyāmu then fasting شَهْرَيْنِ shahrayni (for) two months مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ mutatābiʿayni consecutively مِن min before قَبْلِ qabli before أَن an [that] يَتَمَآسَّا ۖ yatamāssā they both touch each other فَمَن faman But (he) who لَّمْ lam not يَسْتَطِعْ yastaṭiʿ is able فَإِطْعَامُ fa-iṭ'ʿāmu then (the) feeding سِتِّينَ sittīna (of) sixty مِسْكِينًۭا ۚ mis'kīnan needy one(s) ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ litu'minū so that you may believe بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi in Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ warasūlihi and His Messenger وَتِلْكَ watil'ka and these حُدُودُ ḥudūdu (are the) limits ٱللَّهِ ۗ l-lahi (of) Allah وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ walil'kāfirīna and for the disbelievers عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment أَلِيمٌ alīmun painful

Transliteration

Faman lam yajid fasiyamushahrayni mutatabiAAayni min qabli an yatamassafaman lam yastatiAA fa-itAAamu sitteenamiskeenan thalika litu/minoo billahiwarasoolihi watilka hudoodu Allahi walilkafireenaAAathabun aleem

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And he who findeth not (the wherewithal), let him fast for two successive months before they touch one another; and for him who is unable to do so (the penance is) the feeding of sixty needy ones. This, that ye may put trust in Allah and His messenger. Such are the limits (imposed by Allah); and for disbelievers is a painful doom.

And if any has not (the wherewithal), he should fast for two months consecutively before they touch each other. But if any is unable to do so, he should feed sixty indigent ones, this, that ye may show your faith in Allah and His Messenger. Those are limits (set by) Allah. For those who reject (Him), there is a grievous Penalty.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( فمن لم يجد فصيام شهرين متتابعين من قبل أن يتماسا فمن لم يستطع فإطعام ستين مسكينا ) وقد تقدمت الأحاديث الواردة بهذا على الترتيب ، كما ثبت في الصحيحين في قصة الذي جامع امرأته في رمضان .

( ذلك لتؤمنوا بالله ورسوله ) أي : شرعنا هذا لهذا .

وقوله : ( وتلك حدود الله ) أي : محارمه فلا تنتهكوها .

وقوله : ( وللكافرين عذاب أليم ) أي : الذين لم يؤمنوا ولا التزموا بأحكام هذه الشريعة ، لا تعتقدوا أنهم ناجون من البلاء ، كلا ليس الأمر كما زعموا ، بل لهم عذاب أليم ، أي : في الدنيا والآخرة .
