Quran 6:116

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 116

وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

Word by word

وَإِن wa-in And if تُطِعْ tuṭiʿ you obey أَكْثَرَ akthara most مَن man of فِى fī (those) in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth يُضِلُّوكَ yuḍillūka they will mislead you عَن ʿan from سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah إِن in Not يَتَّبِعُونَ yattabiʿūna they follow إِلَّا illā except ٱلظَّنَّ l-ẓana [the] assumption وَإِنْ wa-in and not هُمْ hum they (do) إِلَّا illā except يَخْرُصُونَ yakhruṣūna guess

Transliteration

Wa-in tutiAA akthara man fee al-ardiyudillooka AAan sabeeli Allahi in yattabiAAoona illaaththanna wa-in hum illa yakhrusoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

If thou obeyedst most of those on earth they would mislead thee far from Allah's way. They follow naught but an opinion, and they do but guess.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Wert thou to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead thee away from the way of Allah. They follow nothing but conjecture: they do nothing but lie.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عن حال أكثر أهل الأرض من بني آدم أنه الضلال ، كما قال تعالى : ( ولقد ضل قبلهم أكثر الأولين ) [ الصافات : 71 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( وما أكثر الناس ولو حرصت بمؤمنين ) [ يوسف : 103 ] ، وهم في ضلالهم ليسوا على يقين من أمرهم ، وإنما هم في ظنون كاذبة وحسبان باطل "إن يتبعون إلا الظن وإن هم إلا يخرصون" فإن الخرص هو الحزر ومنه خرص النخل وهو حزر ما عليها من التمر وذلك كله عن قدر الله ومشيئته.
