Quran 6:40

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 40

قُلْ أَرَءَيْتَكُمْ إِنْ أَتَىٰكُمْ عَذَابُ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ أَتَتْكُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ تَدْعُونَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

Word by word

قُلْ qul Say أَرَءَيْتَكُمْ ara-aytakum Have you seen إِنْ in if أَتَىٰكُمْ atākum (there) came to you عَذَابُ ʿadhābu punishment ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah أَوْ aw or أَتَتْكُمُ atatkumu (there) came to you ٱلسَّاعَةُ l-sāʿatu the Hour أَغَيْرَ aghayra is it other ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (than) Allah تَدْعُونَ tadʿūna you call إِن in if كُنتُمْ kuntum you are صَـٰدِقِينَ ṣādiqīna truthful

Transliteration

Qul araaytakum in atakum AAathabuAllahi aw atatkumu assaAAatu aghayra AllahitadAAoona in kuntum sadiqeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Say: Can ye see yourselves, if the punishment of Allah come upon you or the Hour come upon you, (calling upon other than Allah)? Do ye then call (for help) to any other than Allah? (Answer that) if ye are truthful.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Say: "Think ye to yourselves, if there come upon you the wrath of Allah, or the Hour (that ye dread), would ye then call upon other than Allah?- (reply) if ye are truthful!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى أنه الفعال لما يريد ، المتصرف في خلقه بما يشاء ، وأنه لا معقب لحكمه ، ولا يقدر أحد على صرف حكمه عن خلقه ، بل هو وحده لا شريك له ، الذي إذا سئل يجيب لمن يشاء ; ولهذا قال : ( قل أرأيتكم إن أتاكم عذاب الله أو أتتكم الساعة ) أي : أتاكم هذا أو هذا ( أغير الله تدعون إن كنتم صادقين؟ ) أي : لا تدعون غيره لعلمكم أنه لا يقدر أحد على دفع ذلك سواه ; ولهذا قال : ( إن كنتم صادقين ) أي : في اتخاذكم آلهة معه .
