Quran 6:6

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 6

أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ مَّكَّنَّٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَا لَمْ نُمَكِّن لَّكُمْ وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْهِم مِّدْرَارًا وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرَ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهِمْ فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَأَنشَأْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْنًا ءَاخَرِينَ

Word by word

أَلَمْ alam Did not يَرَوْا۟ yaraw they see كَمْ kam how many أَهْلَكْنَا ahlaknā We destroyed مِن min from قَبْلِهِم qablihim before them مِّن min of قَرْنٍۢ qarnin generations مَّكَّنَّـٰهُمْ makkannāhum We had established them فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth مَا mā what لَمْ lam not نُمَكِّن numakkin We (have) established لَّكُمْ lakum for you وَأَرْسَلْنَا wa-arsalnā And We sent ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa (rain from) the sky عَلَيْهِم ʿalayhim upon them مِّدْرَارًۭا mid'rāran showering abundantly وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرَ l-anhāra the rivers تَجْرِى tajrī flow مِن min from تَحْتِهِمْ taḥtihim underneath them فَأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُم fa-ahlaknāhum Then We destroyed them بِذُنُوبِهِمْ bidhunūbihim for their sins وَأَنشَأْنَا wa-anshanā and We raised مِنۢ min from بَعْدِهِمْ baʿdihim after them قَرْنًا qarnan generations ءَاخَرِينَ ākharīna other

Transliteration

Alam yaraw kam ahlakna min qablihimmin qarnin makkannahum fee al-ardi ma lamnumakkin lakum waarsalna assamaa AAalayhimmidraran wajaAAalna al-anhara tajree min tahtihimfaahlaknahum bithunoobihim waansha/na minbaAAdihim qarnan akhareen

See they not how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth more firmly than We have established you, and We shed on them abundant showers from the sky, and made the rivers flow beneath them. Yet we destroyed them for their sins, and created after them another generation.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

See they not how many of those before them We did destroy?- generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you - for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى واعظا ومحذرا لهم أن يصيبهم من العذاب والنكال الدنيوي ما حل بأشباههم ونظرائهم من القرون السالفة الذين كانوا أشد منهم قوة ، وأكثر جمعا ، وأكثر أموالا وأولادا واستغلالا للأرض وعمارة لها ، فقال ( ألم يروا كم أهلكنا من قبلهم من قرن مكناهم في الأرض ما لم نمكن لكم ) أي : من الأموال والأولاد والأعمار ، والجاه العريض ، والسعة والجنود ( وأرسلنا السماء عليهم مدرارا ) أي : شيئا بعد شيء ( وجعلنا الأنهار تجري من تحتهم ) أي : أكثرنا عليهم أمطار السماء وينابيع الأرض ، أي : استدراجا وإملاء لهم ( فأهلكناهم بذنوبهم ) أي : بخطاياهم وسيئاتهم التي اجترموها ( وأنشأنا من بعدهم قرنا آخرين ) أي : فذهب الأولون كأمس الذاهب وجعلناهم أحاديث ( وأنشأنا من بعدهم قرنا آخرين ) أي : جيلا آخر لنختبرهم ، فعملوا مثل أعمالهم فهلكوا كهلاكهم . فاحذروا أيها المخاطبون أن يصيبكم [ مثل ] ما أصابهم ، فما أنتم بأعز على الله منهم ، والرسول الذي كذبتموه أكرم على الله من رسولهم ، فأنتم أولى بالعذاب ومعاجلة العقوبة منهم ، لولا لطفه وإحسانه .
