Quran 6:88

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 88

ذَٰلِكَ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ يَهْدِى بِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَلَوْ أَشْرَكُوا۟ لَحَبِطَ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

Word by word

ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That هُدَى hudā (is the) Guidance ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah يَهْدِى yahdī He guides بِهِۦ bihi with it مَن man whom يَشَآءُ yashāu He wills مِنْ min of عِبَادِهِۦ ۚ ʿibādihi His slaves وَلَوْ walaw But if أَشْرَكُوا۟ ashrakū they (had) associated partners (with Allah) لَحَبِطَ laḥabiṭa surely (would be) worthless عَنْهُم ʿanhum for them مَّا mā what كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to يَعْمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna do

Transliteration

Thalika huda Allahiyahdee bihi man yashao min AAibadihi walaw ashrakoolahabita AAanhum ma kanoo yaAAmaloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Such is the guidance of Allah wherewith He guideth whom He will of His bondmen. But if they had set up (for worship) aught beside Him, (all) that they did would have been vain.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

This is the guidance of Allah: He giveth that guidance to whom He pleaseth, of His worshippers. If they were to join other gods with Him, all that they did would be vain for them.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( ذلك هدى الله يهدي به من يشاء من عباده ) أي : إنما حصل لهم ذلك بتوفيق الله وهدايته إياهم ( ولو أشركوا لحبط عنهم ما كانوا يعملون ) تشديد لأمر الشرك ، وتغليظ لشأنه ، وتعظيم لملابسته ، كما قال [ تعالى ] ( ولقد أوحي إليك وإلى الذين من قبلك لئن أشركت ليحبطن عملك ) الآية [ الزمر : 65 ] ، وهذا شرط ، والشرط لا يقتضي جواز الوقوع ، كقوله [ تعالى ] ( قل إن كان للرحمن ولد فأنا أول العابدين ) [ الزخرف : 81 ] ، وكقوله ( لو أردنا أن نتخذ لهوا لاتخذناه من لدنا إن كنا فاعلين ) [ الأنبياء : 17 ] وكقوله ( لو أراد الله أن يتخذ ولدا لاصطفى مما يخلق ما يشاء سبحانه هو الله الواحد القهار ) [ الزمر : 4 ] .
