Quran 62:5

Surah Al-Jumu'a, Verse 5

مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ حُمِّلُوا۟ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَحْمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ ٱلْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًۢا بِئْسَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Word by word

مَثَلُ mathalu (The) likeness ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who حُمِّلُوا۟ ḥummilū were entrusted ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ l-tawrāta (with) the Taurat ثُمَّ thumma then لَمْ lam not يَحْمِلُوهَا yaḥmilūhā they bore it كَمَثَلِ kamathali (is) like ٱلْحِمَارِ l-ḥimāri the donkey يَحْمِلُ yaḥmilu who carries أَسْفَارًۢا ۚ asfāran books بِئْسَ bi'sa Wretched is مَثَلُ mathalu (the) example ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi (of) the people ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna who كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū deny بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti (the) Signs ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah لَا lā (does) not يَهْدِى yahdī guide ٱلْقَوْمَ l-qawma the people ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers

Transliteration

Mathalu allatheena hummiloo attawratathumma lam yahmilooha kamathali alhimariyahmilu asfaran bi/sa mathalu alqawmi allatheenakaththaboo bi-ayati Allahi wallahula yahdee alqawma aththalimeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the ass carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The similitude of those who were charged with the (obligations of the) Mosaic Law, but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is that of a donkey which carries huge tomes (but understands them not). Evil is the similitude of people who falsify the Signs of Allah: and Allah guides not people who do wrong.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى ذاما لليهود الذين أعطوا التوراة وحملوها للعمل بها ، فلم يعملوا بها ، مثلهم في ذلك كمثل الحمار يحمل أسفارا ، أي : كمثل الحمار إذا حمل كتبا لا يدري ما فيها ، فهو يحملها حملا حسيا ولا يدري ما عليه . وكذلك هؤلاء في حملهم الكتاب الذي أوتوه ، حفظوه لفظا ولم يفهموه ولا عملوا بمقتضاه ، بل أولوه وحرفوه وبدلوه ، فهم أسوأ حالا من الحمير ; لأن الحمار لا فهم له ، وهؤلاء لهم فهوم لم يستعملوها ; ولهذا قال في الآية الأخرى : ( أولئك كالأنعام بل هم أضل أولئك هم الغافلون ) [ الأعراف : 179 ] وقال ها هنا : ( بئس مثل القوم الذين كذبوا بآيات الله والله لا يهدي القوم الظالمين )

وقال الإمام أحمد رحمه الله : حدثنا ابن نمير ، عن مجالد ، عن الشعبي ، عن ابن عباس قال : قال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - : " من تكلم يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب ، فهو كمثل الحمار يحمل أسفارا ، والذي يقول له " أنصت " ، ليس له جمعة "
