Quran 7:138

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 138

وَجَٰوَزْنَا بِبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰٓ أَصْنَامٍ لَّهُمْ قَالُوا۟ يَٰمُوسَى ٱجْعَل لَّنَآ إِلَٰهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ

Word by word

وَجَـٰوَزْنَا wajāwaznā And We led across بِبَنِىٓ bibanī (the) Children إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (of) Israel ٱلْبَحْرَ l-baḥra the sea فَأَتَوْا۟ fa-ataw Then they came عَلَىٰ ʿalā upon قَوْمٍۢ qawmin a people يَعْكُفُونَ yaʿkufūna devoted عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā to أَصْنَامٍۢ aṣnāmin idols لَّهُمْ ۚ lahum of theirs قَالُوا۟ qālū They said يَـٰمُوسَى yāmūsā O Musa ٱجْعَل ij'ʿal Make لَّنَآ lanā for us إِلَـٰهًۭا ilāhan a god كَمَا kamā like what لَهُمْ lahum they have ءَالِهَةٌۭ ۚ ālihatun gods قَالَ qāla He said إِنَّكُمْ innakum Indeed, you قَوْمٌۭ qawmun (are) a people تَجْهَلُونَ tajhalūna ignorant

Transliteration

Wajawazna bibanee isra-eelaalbahra faataw AAala qawmin yaAAkufoona AAalaasnamin lahum qaloo ya moosaijAAal lana ilahan kama lahum alihatunqala innakum qawmun tajhaloon

Translations

And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We took the Children of Israel (with safety) across the sea. They came upon a people devoted entirely to some idols they had. They said: "O Moses! fashion for us a god like unto the gods they have." He said: "Surely ye are a people without knowledge.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عما قاله جهلة بني إسرائيل لموسى ، عليه السلام ، حين جاوزوا البحر ، وقد رأوا من آيات الله وعظيم سلطانه ما رأوا ، ( فأتوا ) أي : فمروا ( على قوم يعكفون على أصنام لهم ) قال بعض المفسرين : كانوا من الكنعانيين . وقيل : كانوا من لخم .

قال ابن جريج : وكانوا يعبدون أصناما على صور البقر ، فلهذا أثار ذلك شبهة لهم في عبادتهم العجل بعد ذلك ، فقالوا : ( يا موسى اجعل لنا إلها كما لهم آلهة قال إنكم قوم تجهلون ) أي : تجهلون عظمة الله وجلاله ، وما يجب أن ينزه عنه من الشريك والمثيل .
