Quran 7:137

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 137

وَأَوْرَثْنَا ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مَشَٰرِقَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَغَٰرِبَهَا ٱلَّتِى بَٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَدَمَّرْنَا مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِرْعَوْنُ وَقَوْمُهُۥ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْرِشُونَ

Word by word

وَأَوْرَثْنَا wa-awrathnā And We made inheritors ٱلْقَوْمَ l-qawma the people ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَانُوا۟ kānū were يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ yus'taḍʿafūna considered weak مَشَـٰرِقَ mashāriqa (the) eastern (parts) ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi (of) the land وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا wamaghāribahā and the western (parts) of it ٱلَّتِى allatī which بَـٰرَكْنَا bāraknā We blessed فِيهَا ۖ fīhā [in it] وَتَمَّتْ watammat And was fulfilled كَلِمَتُ kalimatu (the) word رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ l-ḥus'nā the best عَلَىٰ ʿalā for بَنِىٓ banī (the) Children إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (of) Israel بِمَا bimā because صَبَرُوا۟ ۖ ṣabarū they were patient وَدَمَّرْنَا wadammarnā And We destroyed مَا mā what كَانَ kāna used to يَصْنَعُ yaṣnaʿu make فِرْعَوْنُ fir'ʿawnu Firaun وَقَوْمُهُۥ waqawmuhu and his people وَمَا wamā and what كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to يَعْرِشُونَ yaʿrishūna erect

Transliteration

Waawrathna alqawma allatheenakanoo yustadAAafoona mashariqa al-ardiwamagharibaha allatee barakna feehawatammat kalimatu rabbika alhusna AAalabanee isra-eela bima sabaroo wadammarnama kana yasnaAAu firAAawnu waqawmuhu wamakanoo yaAArishoon

Translations

And We caused the folk who were despised to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We had blessed. And the fair word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance; and We annihilated (all) that Pharaoh and his folk had done and that they had contrived.

And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وأخبر تعالى أنه أورث القوم الذين كانوا يستضعفون - وهم بنو إسرائيل - مشارق الأرض ومغاربها ( 137 ) ) كما قال تعالى : ( ونريد أن نمن على الذين استضعفوا في الأرض ونجعلهم أئمة ونجعلهم الوارثين ونمكن لهم في الأرض ونري فرعون وهامان وجنودهما منهم ما كانوا يحذرون ) [ القصص : 5 ، 6 ] وقال تعالى : ( كم تركوا من جنات وعيون وزروع ومقام كريم ونعمة كانوا فيها فاكهين كذلك وأورثناها قوما آخرين ) [ الدخان : 25 - 28 ]

وعن الحسن البصري وقتادة ، في قوله : ( مشارق الأرض ومغاربها التي باركنا فيها ) يعني : الشام .

وقوله : ( وتمت كلمة ربك الحسنى على بني إسرائيل بما صبروا ) قال مجاهد وابن جرير : وهي قوله تعالى : ( ونريد أن نمن على الذين استضعفوا في الأرض ونجعلهم أئمة ونجعلهم الوارثين ونمكن لهم في الأرض ونري فرعون وهامان وجنودهما منهم ما كانوا يحذرون )

وقوله : ( ودمرنا ما كان يصنع فرعون وقومه ) أي : وخربنا ما كان فرعون وقومه يصنعونه من العمارات والمزارع ، ( وما كانوا يعرشون ) قال ابن عباس ومجاهد : ( يعرشون ) يبنون .
