Quran 7:82

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 82

وَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not كَانَ kāna was جَوَابَ jawāba (the) answer قَوْمِهِۦٓ qawmihi (of) his people إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that قَالُوٓا۟ qālū they said أَخْرِجُوهُم akhrijūhum Drive them out مِّن min of قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ qaryatikum your town إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they أُنَاسٌۭ unāsun (are) people يَتَطَهَّرُونَ yataṭahharūna who keep themselves pure

Transliteration

Wama kana jawabaqawmihi illa an qaloo akhrijoohum min qaryatikuminnahum onasun yatatahharoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And the answer of his people was only that they said (one to another): Turn them out of your township. They are folk, forsooth, who keep pure.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And his people gave no answer but this: they said, "Drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

أي : ما أجابوا لوطا إلا أن هموا بإخراجه ونفيه ومن معه من المؤمنين من بين أظهرهم ، فأخرجه الله تعالى سالما ، وأهلكهم في أرضهم صاغرين مهانين .

وقوله تعالى : ( إنهم أناس يتطهرون ) قال قتادة ، عابوهم بغير عيب .

وقال مجاهد : ( إنهم أناس يتطهرون ) من أدبار الرجال وأدبار النساء . وروي مثله عن ابن عباس أيضا .
