Quran 7:88

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 88

قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَنُخْرِجَنَّكَ يَٰشُعَيْبُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَكَ مِن قَرْيَتِنَآ أَوْ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِى مِلَّتِنَا قَالَ أَوَلَوْ كُنَّا كَٰرِهِينَ

Word by word

۞ قَالَ qāla Said ٱلْمَلَأُ l-mala-u the chiefs ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ is'takbarū were arrogant مِن min among قَوْمِهِۦ qawmihi his people لَنُخْرِجَنَّكَ lanukh'rijannaka We will surely drive you out يَـٰشُعَيْبُ yāshuʿaybu O Shuaib وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū (have) believed مَعَكَ maʿaka with you مِن min from قَرْيَتِنَآ qaryatinā our city أَوْ aw or لَتَعُودُنَّ lataʿūdunna you must return فِى fī to مِلَّتِنَا ۚ millatinā our religion قَالَ qāla He said أَوَلَوْ awalaw Even if كُنَّا kunnā we are كَـٰرِهِينَ kārihīna (the) ones who hate (it)

Transliteration

Qala almalao allatheenaistakbaroo min qawmihi lanukhrijannaka ya shuAAaybu wallatheenaamanoo maAAaka min qaryatina aw lataAAoodunna feemillatina qala awa law kunna kariheen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said: Surely we will drive thee out, O Shu'eyb, and those who believe with thee, from our township, unless ye return to our religion. He said: Even though we hate it?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The leaders, the arrogant party among his people, said: "O Shu'aib! we shall certainly drive thee out of our city - (thee) and those who believe with thee; or else ye (thou and they) shall have to return to our ways and religion." He said: "What! even though we do detest (them)?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

هذا إخبار من الله تعالى عما واجهت به الكفار نبي الله شعيبا ومن معه من المؤمنين ، في توعدهم إياه ومن معه بالنفي من القرية ، أو الإكراه على الرجوع في ملتهم والدخول معهم فيما هم فيه . وهذا خطاب مع الرسول والمراد أتباعه الذين كانوا معه على الملة .

وقوله : ( أولو كنا كارهين ) يقول : أو أنتم فاعلون ذلك ولو كنا كارهين ما تدعونا إليه ؟ فإنا إن رجعنا إلى ملتكم ودخلنا معكم فيما أنتم فيه ، فقد أعظمنا الفرية على الله في جعل الشركاء معه أندادا . وهذا تعبير منه عن أتباعه .
