Quran 7:89

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 89

قَدِ ٱفْتَرَيْنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا إِنْ عُدْنَا فِى مِلَّتِكُم بَعْدَ إِذْ نَجَّىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْهَا وَمَا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّعُودَ فِيهَآ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَا وَسِعَ رَبُّنَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عِلْمًا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا رَبَّنَا ٱفْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْفَٰتِحِينَ

Word by word

قَدِ qadi Verily ٱفْتَرَيْنَا if'taraynā we would have fabricated عَلَى ʿalā against ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah كَذِبًا kadhiban a lie إِنْ in if عُدْنَا ʿud'nā we returned فِى fī in مِلَّتِكُم millatikum your religion بَعْدَ baʿda after إِذْ idh [when] نَجَّىٰنَا najjānā saved us ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah مِنْهَا ۚ min'hā from it وَمَا wamā And not يَكُونُ yakūnu it is لَنَآ lanā for us أَن an that نَّعُودَ naʿūda we return فِيهَآ fīhā in it إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that يَشَآءَ yashāa wills ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah رَبُّنَا ۚ rabbunā our Lord وَسِعَ wasiʿa Encompasses رَبُّنَا rabbunā (by) Our Lord كُلَّ kulla every شَىْءٍ shayin thing عِلْمًا ۚ ʿil'man (in) knowledge عَلَى ʿalā Upon ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah تَوَكَّلْنَا ۚ tawakkalnā we put our trust رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord ٱفْتَحْ if'taḥ Decide بَيْنَنَا baynanā between us وَبَيْنَ wabayna and between قَوْمِنَا qawminā our people بِٱلْحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi in truth وَأَنتَ wa-anta and You خَيْرُ khayru (are the) Best ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ l-fātiḥīna (of) those who Decide

Transliteration

Qadi iftarayna AAala Allahikathiban in AAudna fee millatikum baAAda ithnajjana Allahu minha wamayakoonu lana an naAAooda feeha illa an yashaaAllahu rabbuna wasiAAa rabbuna kulla shay-inAAilman AAala Allahi tawakkalna rabbanaiftah baynana wabayna qawmina bilhaqqiwaanta khayru alfatiheen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

We should have invented a lie against Allah if we returned to your religion after Allah hath rescued us from it. It is not for us to return to it unless Allah our Lord should (so) will. Our Lord comprehendeth all things in knowledge. In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord! Decide with truth between us and our folk, for Thou art the best of those who make decision.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"We should indeed invent a lie against Allah, if we returned to your ways after Allah hath rescued us therefrom; nor could we by any manner of means return thereto unless it be as in the will and plan of Allah, Our Lord. Our Lord can reach out to the utmost recesses of things by His knowledge. In the Allah is our trust. our Lord! decide Thou between us and our people in truth, for Thou art the best to decide."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وما يكون لنا أن نعود فيها إلا أن يشاء الله ربنا ) وهذا رد إلى المشيئة ، فإنه يعلم كل شيء ، وقد أحاط بكل شيء علما ، ( على الله توكلنا ) أي : في أمورنا ما نأتي منها وما نذر ( ربنا افتح بيننا وبين قومنا بالحق ) أي : افصل بيننا وبين قومنا ، وانصرنا عليهم ، ( وأنت خير الفاتحين ) أي : خير الحاكمين ، فإنك العادل الذي لا يجور أبدا .
