Quran 7:96

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 96

وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَرَكَٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبُوا۟ فَأَخَذْنَٰهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

Word by word

وَلَوْ walaw And if أَنَّ anna [that] أَهْلَ ahla people ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ l-qurā (of) the cities ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū (had) believed وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ wa-ittaqaw and feared Allah لَفَتَحْنَا lafataḥnā surely We (would have) opened عَلَيْهِم ʿalayhim upon them بَرَكَـٰتٍۢ barakātin blessings مِّنَ mina from ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the heaven وَٱلْأَرْضِ wal-arḍi and the earth وَلَـٰكِن walākin but كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū they denied فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم fa-akhadhnāhum So We seized them بِمَا bimā for what كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to يَكْسِبُونَ yaksibūna earn

Transliteration

Walaw anna ahla alqura amanoowattaqaw lafatahna AAalayhim barakatinmina assama-i wal-ardi walakinkaththaboo faakhathnahum bima kanooyaksiboon

Translations

And if the people of the townships had believed and kept from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth. But (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, and so We seized them on account of what they used to earn.

If the people of the towns had but believed and feared Allah, We should indeed have opened out to them (All kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth), and We brought them to book for their misdeeds.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن قلة إيمان أهل القرى الذين أرسل فيهم الرسل ، كقوله تعالى ( فلولا كانت قرية آمنت فنفعها إيمانها إلا قوم يونس لما آمنوا كشفنا عنهم عذاب الخزي في الحياة الدنيا ومتعناهم إلى حين ) [ يونس : 98 ] أي : ما آمنت قرية بتمامها إلا قوم يونس ، فإنهم آمنوا ، وذلك بعد ما عاينوا العذاب ، كما قال تعالى : ( وأرسلناه إلى مائة ألف أو يزيدون فآمنوا فمتعناهم إلى حين ) [ الصافات : 147 ، 148 ] وقال تعالى : ( وما أرسلنا في قرية من نذير إلا قال مترفوها إنا بما أرسلتم به كافرون ) [ سبأ : 34 ]

وقوله تعالى : ( ولو أن أهل القرى آمنوا واتقوا ) أي : آمنت قلوبهم بما جاءتهم به الرسل ، وصدقت به واتبعته ، واتقوا بفعل الطاعات وترك المحرمات ، ( لفتحنا عليهم بركات من السماء والأرض ) أي : قطر السماء ونبات الأرض . قال تعالى : ( ولكن كذبوا فأخذناهم بما كانوا يكسبون ) أي : ولكن كذبوا رسلهم ، فعاقبناهم بالهلاك على ما كسبوا من المآثم والمحارم .
