Surah Al-Anfaal, Verse 57

فَإِمَّا تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَرْبِ فَشَرِّدْ بِهِم مَّنْ خَلْفَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

Transliteration
Fa-imma tathqafannahum fee alharbifasharrid bihim man khalfahum laAAallahum yaththakkaroon
Translations
Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall
If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember.
Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali
If ye gain the mastery over them in war, disperse, with them, those who follow them, that they may remember.
تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir
( فإما تثقفنهم في الحرب ) أي : تغلبهم وتظفر بهم في حرب ، ( فشرد بهم من خلفهم ) أي : نكل بهم ، قاله : ابن عباس ، والحسن البصري ، والضحاك ، والسدي ، وعطاء الخراساني ، وابن عيينة ، ومعناه : غلظ عقوبتهم وأثخنهم قتلا ليخاف من سواهم من الأعداء - من العرب وغيرهم - ويصيروا لهم عبرة ( لعلهم يذكرون )
وقال السدي : يقول : لعلهم يحذرون أن ينكثوا فيصنع بهم مثل ذلك .
