Quran 9:13

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 13

أَلَا تُقَٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Word by word

أَلَا alā Will not تُقَـٰتِلُونَ tuqātilūna you fight قَوْمًۭا qawman a people نَّكَثُوٓا۟ nakathū who broke أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ aymānahum their oaths وَهَمُّوا۟ wahammū and determined بِإِخْرَاجِ bi-ikh'rāji to drive out ٱلرَّسُولِ l-rasūli the Messenger وَهُم wahum and they بَدَءُوكُمْ badaūkum began (to attack) you أَوَّلَ awwala first مَرَّةٍ ۚ marratin time أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ atakhshawnahum Do you fear them فَٱللَّهُ fal-lahu But Allah أَحَقُّ aḥaqqu (has) more right أَن an that تَخْشَوْهُ takhshawhu you should fear Him إِن in if كُنتُم kuntum you are مُّؤْمِنِينَ mu'minīna believers

Transliteration

Ala tuqatiloona qawmannakathoo aymanahum wahammoo bi-ikhraji arrasooliwahum badaookum awwala marratin atakhshawnahum fallahuahaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum mu/mineen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Will ye not fight a folk who broke their solemn pledges, and purposed to drive out the messenger and did attack you first? What! Fear ye them? Now Allah hath more right that ye should fear Him, if ye are believers

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Will ye not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and took the aggressive by being the first (to assault) you? Do ye fear them? Nay, it is Allah Whom ye should more justly fear, if ye believe!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وهذا أيضا تهييج وتحضيض وإغراء على قتال المشركين الناكثين لأيمانهم ، الذين هموا بإخراج الرسول من مكة ، كما قال تعالى : ( وإذ يمكر بك الذين كفروا ليثبتوك أو يقتلوك أو يخرجوك ويمكرون ويمكر الله والله خير الماكرين ) [ الأنفال : 30 ] .

وقال تعالى : ( يخرجون الرسول وإياكم أن تؤمنوا بالله ربكم [ إن كنتم خرجتم جهادا في سبيلي وابتغاء مرضاتي ] ) الآية [ الممتحنة : 1 ] وقال تعالى : ( وإن كادوا ليستفزونك من الأرض ليخرجوك منها وإذا لا يلبثون خلافك إلا قليلا ) [ الإسراء : 76 ] وقوله ( وهم بدءوكم أول مرة ) قيل : المراد بذلك يوم بدر ، حين خرجوا لنصر عيرهم فلما نجت وعلموا بذلك استمروا على وجوههم طلبا للقتال ؛ بغيا وتكبرا ، كما تقدم بسط ذلك .

وقيل : المراد نقضهم العهد وقتالهم مع حلفائهم بني بكر لخزاعة أحلاف رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - حتى سار إليهم رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - عام الفتح ، وكان ما كان ، ولله الحمد .

وقوله : ( أتخشونهم فالله أحق أن تخشوه إن كنتم مؤمنين ) يقول تعالى : لا تخشوهم واخشون ، فأنا أهل أن يخشى العباد من سطوتي وعقوبتي ، فبيدي الأمر ، وما شئت كان ، وما لم أشأ لم يكن .
