Quran 9:45

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 45

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱرْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِى رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ

Word by word

إِنَّمَا innamā Only يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ yastadhinuka ask your leave ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who لَا lā (do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi in Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِ wal-yawmi and the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ l-ākhiri the Last وَٱرْتَابَتْ wa-ir'tābat and (are in) doubts قُلُوبُهُمْ qulūbuhum their hearts فَهُمْ fahum so they فِى fī in رَيْبِهِمْ raybihim their doubts يَتَرَدَّدُونَ yataraddadūna they waver

Transliteration

Innama yasta/thinuka allatheenala yu/minoona billahi walyawmi al-akhiriwartabat quloobuhum fahum fee raybihimyataraddadoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They alone ask leave of thee who believe not in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts feel doubt, so in their doubt they waver.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Only those ask thee for exemption who believe not in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts are in doubt, so that they are tossed in their doubts to and fro.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( والله عليم بالمتقين إنما يستأذنك ) أي : في القعود ممن لا عذر له ( الذين لا يؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر ) أي : لا يرجون ثواب الله في الدار الآخرة على أعمالهم ، ( وارتابت قلوبهم ) أي : شكت في صحة ما جئتهم به ، ( فهم في ريبهم يترددون ) أي : يتحيرون ، يقدمون رجلا ويؤخرون أخرى ، وليست لهم قدم ثابتة في شيء ، فهم قوم حيارى هلكى ، لا إلى هؤلاء ولا إلى هؤلاء ، ومن يضلل الله فلن تجد له سبيلا .
