Quran 9:46

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 46

وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةً وَلَٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ ٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْقَٰعِدِينَ

Word by word

۞ وَلَوْ walaw And if أَرَادُوا۟ arādū they had wished ٱلْخُرُوجَ l-khurūja (to) go forth لَأَعَدُّوا۟ la-aʿaddū surely they (would) have prepared لَهُۥ lahu for it عُدَّةًۭ ʿuddatan (some) preparation وَلَـٰكِن walākin But كَرِهَ kariha Allah disliked ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah disliked ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ inbiʿāthahum their being sent فَثَبَّطَهُمْ fathabbaṭahum so He made them lag behind وَقِيلَ waqīla and it was said ٱقْعُدُوا۟ uq'ʿudū Sit مَعَ maʿa with ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ l-qāʿidīna those who sit

Transliteration

Walaw aradoo alkhurooja laaAAaddoolahu AAuddatan walakin kariha Allahu inbiAAathahumfathabbatahum waqeela oqAAudoo maAAa alqaAAideen

Translations

And if they had wished to go forth they would assuredly have made ready some equipment, but Allah was averse to their being sent forth and held them back and it was said (unto them): Sit ye with the sedentary!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If they had intended to come out, they would certainly have made some preparation therefor; but Allah was averse to their being sent forth; so He made them lag behind, and they were told, "Sit ye among those who sit (inactive)."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : ( ولو أرادوا الخروج ) أي : معك إلى الغزو ( لأعدوا له عدة ) أي : لكانوا تأهبوا له ، ( ولكن كره الله انبعاثهم ) أي : أبغض أن يخرجوا معك قدرا ، ( فثبطهم ) أي : أخرهم ، ( وقيل اقعدوا مع القاعدين ) أي : قدرا .
