Quran 9:67

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 67

ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ

Word by word

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ al-munāfiqūna The hypocrite men وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ wal-munāfiqātu and the hypocrite women بَعْضُهُم baʿḍuhum some of them مِّنۢ min (are) of بَعْضٍۢ ۚ baʿḍin others يَأْمُرُونَ yamurūna They enjoin بِٱلْمُنكَرِ bil-munkari the wrong وَيَنْهَوْنَ wayanhawna and forbid عَنِ ʿani what ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ l-maʿrūfi (is) the right وَيَقْبِضُونَ wayaqbiḍūna and they close أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ aydiyahum their hands نَسُوا۟ nasū They forget ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ fanasiyahum so He has forgotten them إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites هُمُ humu they (are) ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ l-fāsiqūna the defiantly disobedient

Transliteration

Almunafiqoona walmunafiqatubaAAduhum min baAAdin ya/muroona bilmunkariwayanhawna AAani almaAAroofi wayaqbidoona aydiyahum nasooAllaha fanasiyahum inna almunafiqeena humu alfasiqoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

The hypocrites, both men and women, proceed one from another. They enjoin the wrong, and they forbid the right, and they withhold their hands (from spending for the cause of Allah). They forget Allah, so He hath forgotten them. Lo! the hypocrites, they are the transgressors.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten Allah; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قول تعالى منكرا على المنافقين الذين هم على خلاف صفات المؤمنين ، ولما كان المؤمنون يأمرون بالمعروف وينهون عن المنكر ، كان هؤلاء ( يأمرون بالمنكر وينهون عن المعروف ويقبضون أيديهم ) أي : عن الإنفاق في سبيل الله ، ( نسوا الله ) أي : نسوا ذكر الله ، ( فنسيهم ) أي : عاملهم معاملة من نسيهم ، كقوله تعالى : ( وقيل اليوم ننساكم كما نسيتم لقاء يومكم هذا ) [ الجاثية : 34 ] ( إن المنافقين هم الفاسقون ) أي : الخارجون عن طريق الحق ، الداخلون في طريق الضلالة .
