Quran 9:77

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 77

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ

Word by word

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ fa-aʿqabahum So He penalized them نِفَاقًۭا nifāqan (with) hypocrisy فِى fī in قُلُوبِهِمْ qulūbihim their hearts إِلَىٰ ilā until يَوْمِ yawmi the day يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ yalqawnahu when they will meet Him بِمَآ bimā because أَخْلَفُوا۟ akhlafū they broke ٱللَّهَ l-laha (the covenant with) Allah مَا mā what وَعَدُوهُ waʿadūhu they had promised Him وَبِمَا wabimā and because كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to يَكْذِبُونَ yakdhibūna lie

Transliteration

FaaAAqabahum nifaqan fee quloobihimila yawmi yalqawnahu bima akhlafoo Allaha mawaAAadoohu wabima kanoo yakthiboon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

So He hath made the consequence (to be) hypocrisy in their hearts until the day when they shall meet Him, because they broke their word to Allah that they promised Him, and because they lied.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

So He hath put as a consequence hypocrisy into their hearts, (to last) till the Day, whereon they shall meet Him: because they broke their covenant with Allah, and because they lied (again and again).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله تعالى : ( بما أخلفوا الله ما وعدوه وبما كانوا يكذبون ) أي : أعقبهم النفاق في قلوبهم بسبب إخلافهم الوعد وكذبهم ، كما جاء في الصحيح ، عن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أنه قال : آية المنافق ثلاث : إذا حدث كذب ، وإذا وعد أخلف ، وإذا اؤتمن خان وله شواهد كثيرة ، والله أعلم .
