Quran 10:42

Surah Yunus, Verse 42

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُونَ إِلَيْكَ أَفَأَنتَ تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ وَلَوْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

Word by word

وَمِنْهُم wamin'hum And among them مَّن man (are some) who يَسْتَمِعُونَ yastamiʿūna listen إِلَيْكَ ۚ ilayka to you أَفَأَنتَ afa-anta But (can) you تُسْمِعُ tus'miʿu cause the deaf to hear ٱلصُّمَّ l-ṣuma cause the deaf to hear وَلَوْ walaw even though كَانُوا۟ kānū they [were] لَا lā (do) not يَعْقِلُونَ yaʿqilūna use reason

Transliteration

Waminhum man yastamiAAoona ilayka afaantatusmiAAu assumma walaw kanoo layaAAqiloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And of them are some who listen unto thee. But canst thou make the deaf to hear even though they apprehend not?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Among them are some who (pretend to) listen to thee: But canst thou make the deaf to hear,- even though they are without understanding?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( ومنهم من يستمعون إليك ) أي : يسمعون كلامك الحسن ، والقرآن العظيم ، والأحاديث الصحيحة الفصيحة النافعة في القلوب والأبدان والأديان ، وفي هذا كفاية عظيمة ، ولكن ليس ذلك إليك ولا إليهم ، فإنك لا تقدر على إسماع الأصم - وهو الأطرش - فكذلك لا تقدر على هداية هؤلاء ، إلا أن يشاء الله .
