Quran 10:51

Surah Yunus, Verse 51

أَثُمَّ إِذَا مَا وَقَعَ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦٓ ءَآلْـَٰٔنَ وَقَدْ كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

Word by word

أَثُمَّ athumma Is (it) then إِذَا idhā when مَا mā when وَقَعَ waqaʿa (it had) occurred ءَامَنتُم āmantum you (will) believe بِهِۦٓ ۚ bihi in it ءَآلْـَٔـٰنَ āl'āna Now وَقَدْ waqad And certainly كُنتُم kuntum you were بِهِۦ bihi seeking to hasten it تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ tastaʿjilūna seeking to hasten it

Transliteration

Athumma itha ma waqaAAa amantumbihi al-ana waqad kuntum bihi tastaAAjiloon

Translations

Is it (only) then, when it hath befallen you, that ye will believe? What! (Believe) now, when (until now) ye have been hastening it on (through disbelief)?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"Would ye then believe in it at last, when it actually cometh to pass? (It will then be said): 'Ah! now? and ye wanted (aforetime) to hasten it on!'

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

"أثم إذا ما وقع آمنتم به الآن وقد كنتم به تستعجلون" يعني : أنهم إذا جاءهم العذاب قالوا : ( ربنا أبصرنا وسمعنا فارجعنا نعمل صالحا إنا موقنون ) [ السجدة : 12 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( فلما رأوا بأسنا قالوا آمنا بالله وحده وكفرنا بما كنا به مشركين فلم يك ينفعهم إيمانهم لما رأوا بأسنا سنة الله التي قد خلت في عباده وخسر هنالك الكافرون ) [ غافر : 84 ، 85 ] .
