Surah Hud, Verse 101

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ فَمَآ أَغْنَتْ عَنْهُمْ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِى يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ لَّمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ وَمَا زَادُوهُمْ غَيْرَ تَتْبِيبٍ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not ظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْ ẓalamnāhum We wronged them وَلَـٰكِن walākin but ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ẓalamū they wronged أَنفُسَهُمْ ۖ anfusahum themselves فَمَآ famā So not أَغْنَتْ aghnat availed عَنْهُمْ ʿanhum them ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ālihatuhumu their gods ٱلَّتِى allatī which يَدْعُونَ yadʿūna they invoked مِن min other than Allah دُونِ dūni other than Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi other than Allah مِن min any شَىْءٍۢ shayin thing لَّمَّا lammā when جَآءَ jāa came أَمْرُ amru (the) command (of) your Lord رَبِّكَ ۖ rabbika (the) command (of) your Lord وَمَا wamā And not زَادُوهُمْ zādūhum they increased them غَيْرَ ghayra other than تَتْبِيبٍۢ tatbībin ruin

Transliteration

Wama thalamnahumwalakin thalamoo anfusahum famaaghnat AAanhum alihatuhumu allatee yadAAoona min dooni Allahimin shay-in lamma jaa amru rabbika wama zadoohumghayra tatbeeb

Translations

We wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves; and their gods on whom they call beside Allah availed them naught when came thy Lord's command; they added to them naught save ruin.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

It was not We that wronged them: They wronged their own souls: the deities, other than Allah, whom they invoked, profited them no whit when there issued the decree of thy Lord: Nor did they add aught (to their lot) but perdition!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وما ظلمناهم ) أي : إذ أهلكناهم ، ( ولكن ظلموا أنفسهم ) أي : بتكذيبهم رسلنا وكفرهم بهم ، ( فما أغنت عنهم آلهتهم ) أي : أصنامهم وأوثانهم التي كانوا يعبدونها ويدعونها ، ( من دون الله من شيء ) أي : ما نفعوهم ولا أنقذوهم لما جاء أمر الله بإهلاكهم ، ( وما زادوهم غير تتبيب ) .

قال مجاهد ، وقتادة ، وغيرهما : أي غير تخسير ، وذلك أن سبب هلاكهم ودمارهم إنما كان باتباعهم تلك الآلهة وعبادتهم إياها فبهذا أصابهم ما أصابهم ، وخسروا بهم ، في الدنيا والآخرة .
