Quran 11:59

Surah Hud, Verse 59

وَتِلْكَ عَادٌ جَحَدُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَعَصَوْا۟ رُسُلَهُۥ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ

Word by word

وَتِلْكَ watil'ka And this عَادٌۭ ۖ ʿādun (was) Aad جَحَدُوا۟ jaḥadū they rejected بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti (the) Signs رَبِّهِمْ rabbihim (of) their Lord وَعَصَوْا۟ waʿaṣaw and disobeyed رُسُلَهُۥ rusulahu His Messengers وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ wa-ittabaʿū and followed أَمْرَ amra (the) command كُلِّ kulli (of) every جَبَّارٍ jabbārin tyrant عَنِيدٍۢ ʿanīdin obstinate

Transliteration

Watilka AAadun jahadoo bi-ayatirabbihim waAAasaw rusulahu wattabaAAoo amra kullijabbarin AAaneed

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And such were A'ad. They denied the revelations of their Lord and flouted His messengers and followed the command of every froward potentate.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Such were the 'Ad People: they rejected the Signs of their Lord and Cherisher; disobeyed His messengers; And followed the command of every powerful, obstinate transgressor.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وتلك عاد جحدوا بآيات ربهم ) [ أي ] كفروا بها ، وعصوا رسل الله ، وذلك أن من كفر بنبي فقد كفر بجميع الأنبياء ، لأنه لا فرق بين أحد منهم في وجوب الإيمان به ، فعاد كفروا بهود ، فنزل كفرهم [ به ] منزلة من كفر بجميع الرسل ، ( واتبعوا أمر كل جبار عنيد ) تركوا اتباع رسولهم الرشيد ، واتبعوا أمر كل جبار عنيد .
