Quran 12:73

Surah Yusuf, Verse 73

قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كُنَّا سَٰرِقِينَ

Word by word

قَالُوا۟ qālū They said تَٱللَّهِ tal-lahi By Allah لَقَدْ laqad certainly عَلِمْتُم ʿalim'tum you know مَّا mā not جِئْنَا ji'nā we came لِنُفْسِدَ linuf'sida that we cause corruption فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land وَمَا wamā and not كُنَّا kunnā we are سَـٰرِقِينَ sāriqīna thieves

Transliteration

Qaloo tallahi laqadAAalimtum ma ji/na linufsida fee al-ardi wamakunna sariqeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They said: By Allah, well ye know we came not to do evil in the land, and are no thieves.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(The brothers) said: "By Allah! well ye know that we came not to make mischief in the land, and we are no thieves!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

لما اتهمهم أولئك الفتيان بالسرقة ، قال لهم إخوة يوسف : ( تالله لقد علمتم ما جئنا لنفسد في الأرض وما كنا سارقين ) أي : لقد تحققتم وعلمتم منذ عرفتمونا - لأنهم شاهدوا منهم سيرة حسنة - أنا ما جئنا للفساد في الأرض ، وما كنا سارقين ، أي : ليست سجايانا تقتضي هذه الصفة ،
