Surah An-Nahl, Verse 18

وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Word by word

وَإِن wa-in And if تَعُدُّوا۟ taʿuddū you should count نِعْمَةَ niʿ'mata the Favors of Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi the Favors of Allah لَا lā not تُحْصُوهَآ ۗ tuḥ'ṣūhā you could enumerate them إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah لَغَفُورٌۭ laghafūrun (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ raḥīmun Most Merciful

Transliteration

Wa-in taAAuddoo niAAmata Allahi latuhsooha inna Allaha laghafoorun raheem

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And if ye would count the favour of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! Allah is indeed Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If ye would count up the favours of Allah, never would ye be able to number them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم نبههم على كثرة نعمه عليهم وإحسانه إليهم ، فقال : ( وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها إن الله لغفور رحيم ) أي : يتجاوز عنكم ، ولو طالبكم بشكر جميع نعمه لعجزتم عن القيام بذلك ، ولو أمركم به لضعفتم وتركتم ، ولو عذبكم لعذبكم وهو غير ظالم لكم ، ولكنه غفور رحيم ، يغفر الكثير ، ويجازي على اليسير .

وقال ابن جرير : يقول : ( إن الله لغفور رحيم ) لما كان منكم من تقصير في شكر بعض ذلك ، إذا تبتم وأنبتم إلى طاعته واتباع مرضاته ، ( رحيم ) بكم أن يعذبكم ، [ أي ] : بعد الإنابة والتوبة .
